The UNM Clinical & Translational Science Center (CTSC) at the Health Sciences Center (HSC) is seeking an experienced, strategic, and effective High Performance Computing (HPC) Systems Specialist 1 to provide systems programming and management support in a complex research computing environment. The HPC Specialist will work as a member of programmer/analyst and data management team on the administration, integration and maintenance of parallel high performance computing systems, clusters, as well as other systems, including advanced filesystems, enterprise storage systems, visualization environments, and networks. Additional tasks include participation in a variety of Informatics initiatives, such as development and maintenance of databases and websites, ensuring integrity and security of data, system integration/deployment, system performance/security analyses, problem resolution, and support of open source web applications. The HPC Systems Specialist will work closely with a range of departmental stakeholders to provide comprehensive support to faculty, researchers, students, and technical staff on the development of system management tools and architectural assessments for production systems. We are seeking a self-motivated individual who enjoys a diverse range of projects and has proven technical skills.
The CTSC is a member of the national Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) consortium, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "Translational" science implies translating research into practice through the cycle of "bench" (traditional lab research) to "bedside" (clinical trials in patients) to "community" (actual adoption in larger systems). The CTSC promotes the expansion of clinical research and the emergence of community voice in the direction and implementation of clinical research.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides systems support for advanced research computing environment, to include the installation, integration and management of high-performance computer systems, clusters, operating systems, peripherals, and system interfaces; monitors system usage; ensures that the high-performance computing complex is operating at optimal performance and reliability levels; additional duties include consulting, training and the development and maintenance of systems documentation.
- Development, documentation, and management of IT processes including security.
- Works in collaboration with systems staff to manage hardware and systems software infrastructure to provide an effective, reliable, high performance, scalable computing environment.
- Participates in the configuration and tuning of batch queuing systems in a high performance, parallel computing production environment; collects and analyzes system utilization statistics and logs; identifies computer system anomalies and operational problems; and provides systems support for databases, web applications, SSO and LDAP, name resolution, and cloud storage services.
- Maintains an understanding of state-of-the-art computing systems and peripherals; Linux and Windows computer operating systems; and scalable, distributed, and parallel architectures.
- Works with users and other computational professionals in evaluating user requirements, and in the configuration and deployment of computational resources.
- Serves as main system administrator for CTSC and REDCap servers, local Linux systems, VIVO maintenance, the research data request portal, and running updates and change logs.
- Troubleshoots issues with applications, accounts, databases and servers.
- Provides technical support to CTSC, University Hospital IT, and HSC IT team members.
- Tracks time and activities for ongoing projects to facilitate billing for services.
- Serves as project leader on small to medium-sized projects.
- Solves moderately complex problems and tasks independently.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Bachelor's degree in a related Technical, Scientific, or Engineering discipline; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
- Skill in examining and evaluating operations and developing data operating strategies, and supporting code, and procedures.
- Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues, and approaches related to medical data stewardship.
- Proficiency with a one or more programming languages, such as Python.
- Experience with a server-side scripting language such as PHP.
- Web programming experience in JavaScript and related frameworks.
- Experience as a database administrator for systems such as MySQL, MS SQL Server, or PostGreSQL.
- Experience configuring server software such as Apache HTTP Server
- Experience with Wikis or other content management systems.
