School of Medicine is seeking to hire an anesthesiologist to fill the role of Director
of Special Needs Dental Anesthesiology.
This position
was created to support the UNM Special Needs Dental Program, the primary group
in the state that provides dental services for patients requiring deep sedation
or general anesthesia. Our team is
dedicated to improving the health and well-being of our special needs community
through compassionate and comprehensive healthcare services. These services are primarily provided in the
main hospital OR, the children's hospital OR, and at several ambulatory surgery
centers all within a one-mile radius of the UNM Health Sciences Center.
You will have

and dental teams to ensure the comfort and safety of our patients during dental

This position
will be hired at the Open Rank level in the Clinician Educator track to join
the Department of Anesthesiology with a secondary appointment in the Department
of Dental Medicine. As the Director of
Special Needs Dental Anesthesiology, you will provide and oversee sedation care
and general anesthesia in all operative venues in which special needs dental
procedures are performed. This would
generally include 2-3 days of clinical work in our dedicated dental ambulatory
surgery center (ASC) as well as dedicated administrative time to run the
anesthesia component of our special needs dental program. Our dental ASC is a state licensed, AAAHC
accredited surgical center dedicated to outpatient dental procedures. We are fully equipped with advanced dental and
medical equipment, including digital x-rays, intraoral cameras, and electronic
charting. Our friendly staff includes
experienced dental and nursing professionals who care for each individual
patient to ensure a positive and pleasant experience.
The position
requires a demonstrated strong clinical background performing all anesthesia
modalities and should be interested in supporting public health dentistry and
sedation dentistry. The ideal candidate
should be comfortable providing general anesthesia/sedation for adults and
children (to include special needs patients) while working with dental
residents. Additionally, the ideal
candidate would be able to demonstrate a safety record that includes pediatric
and adult special needs cases. Lastly,
the candidate should be knowledgeable and have demonstrated some facility with
open-airway sedations.
Responsibilities:
- Intramural practice (Adults and Children, 6 and older)
- Performing general anesthesia and all sedation modalities including nasal intubation
- Working in dental clinics and Main Hospital OR setting
- Resident didactic and clinical training as part of the faculty
- Working with dental residents
- .6 FTE dental anesthesiology and .4 FTE conventional anesthesiology

Minimum
Qualifications:
- Must hold unrestricted Medical License
- Must have a M.D. or equivalent degree
- Must be Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology or within three years of residency and active in the certification process
Preferred
Qualifications:
- Experience in the practice of general anesthesia for greater than 5 years
- Demonstrated safety record that includes pediatric cases, special needs experience, and adult cases.
- Experience in special needs sedation or the willingness to learn special needs sedation
- Demonstrated knowledge of medically complex patients for anesthesia consults
- Hospital experience with general anesthesia/sedation
- Working in an ambulatory surgery center
- Completion of United Council of Neurological Subspecialties accredited fellowship
