Job Description: Director and Principal Investigator, New Mexico Tumor Registry
The Director and Principal Investigator (DPI) of the New Mexico Tumor Registry (NMTR) is responsible for conducting population-based public health surveillance for cancer within the State of New Mexico and among indigenous populations in Arizona, and ensures that Registry resources are well-utilized in support of activities that span the cancer control continuum. To meet these responsibilities, the DPI must obtain, sustain and manage funding to support basic Registry functions and associated activities. Primary funding for the NMTR is currently provided by a 10-year, 40-million-dollar contract with the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (NCI/SEER) Program. Accordingly, the DPI must successfully meet all contractual obligations with NCI/SEER and is expected to actively participate in the SEER Program and in the greater cancer surveillance community. The DPI works closely with UNMCCC senior leadership and others to monitor and document the burden of cancer within the UNMCCC catchment area for the purpose of identifying and addressing opportunities for cancer prevention and control. As a UNM faculty member, the DPI contributes to institutional responsibilities of patient care, education, research, and institutional service. Finally, because NMTR's legal authority to conduct cancer surveillance is derived from New Mexico Administrative Code (Title 7; Chapter 4; Part 3), the DPI maintains excellent working relationships with public health professionals at the New Mexico Department of Health.

Administration: The DPI oversees a well-established cancer surveillance system that is staffed by an experienced team of over 20 individuals who are distributed among four sections: (1) Data Collection, Editing and Quality Control; (2) Epidemiology and Research Administration; (3) Information Management, Data Processing and Information Technology; and (4) Administration and Contract Management. The DPI's extensive working knowledge of population-based cancer surveillance ensures that the NMTR conducts its activities in strict accordance with prevailing standards promulgated by the NCI/SEER Program, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries and the America College of Surgeons. The DPI oversees the routine analysis, interpretation and dissemination of cancer registry data, and directs the cancer registry's scientific research portfolio. The DPI routinely provides guidance to faculty, students, public health professionals, community members and others regarding the use and interpretation of cancer surveillance data.

Leadership: The NMTR is a foundational program within the UNMCCC and the DPI reports directly to the Associate Director of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program. The DPI works closely with the UNMCCC senior leadership team to ensure that they have timely and accurate cancer surveillance data to guide clinical and scientific endeavors, as well as community engagement. The DPI, therefore, is considered a key member of the UNMCCC's Office of Community Outreach and Education (COE). The DPI's academic home lies in the Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Preventive Medicine within the Department of Internal Medicine, which provides opportunities to contribute to research, education and institutional service within the UNM School of Medicine. The DPI also occupies a standing position on the UNM HSC Human Tissue Oversight Committee, which oversees the Human Tissue Repository and the Scientific Review Committee that monitors the use of human tissue resources at UNM HSC.
