What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Day Camp Counselor position at University of New Orleans Summer Day Camp?
As a Camp Counselor, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of all campers participating in our summer program. You will serve as a positive role model, demonstrating enthusiasm, good sportsmanship, and a commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive camp environment. Counselors are expected to maintain open communication with administrative staff, collaborate with fellow counselors, and support instructors in delivering engaging and educational activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure Safety and Well-being of Campers:
- Prioritize the safety and well-being of all campers at all times, maintaining constant vigilance during camp activities and field trips.
- Act as a positive role model, demonstrating enthusiasm, respect, and responsibility in all interactions with campers and fellow staff members.
- Facilitate Activities and Teach Skills:
- Engage actively in camp activities, either by participating alongside campers or by leading small group sessions to teach specific skills.
- Foster a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages campers to learn, grow, and succeed.
- Supervise/assist campers during changing time for swimming.
- Supervise/assist campers during lunch time.
- Supervise Drop-off, Dismissal, and Activities:
- Supervise morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal procedures, ensuring a smooth and orderly transition for campers and their families.
- Maintain discipline and lead groups between activities in an organized and respectful manner, following camp policies and procedures.
- Maintain Records and Assist with Logistics:
- Keep accurate attendance records each morning, reporting any discrepancies or concerns to camp administrative staff.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of activity stations, including water stations, and provide direct supervision during swim time.
- Attend Meetings and Training Sessions:
- Attend all scheduled counselor meetings to discuss camp logistics, address concerns, and collaborate with fellow staff members.
- Participate in mandatory counselor training sessions to learn and review camp policies, emergency procedures, and best practices for working with children.
Qualifications:
- High school graduate or older.
- Must be available for the entire duration of both camp sessions: Session 1 (June 2-27) and Session 2 (July 7 - August 1).
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with campers, fellow counselors, and administrative staff.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and a commitment to serving as a positive role model for campers.
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred, or willingness to obtain certification prior to the start of the camp season.
