Work Schedule and Hours
Typical office hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, but additional weekend and evening hours will be needed to be successful in this position in meeting the needs of the student body and University.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Student Engagement, the Associate Director of Student Engagement provides leadership for student development and community engagement efforts and supports orientation and family engagement initiatives.

The Associate Director has the primary responsibility of providing opportunities for students to develop as leaders and citizens through the planning, coordination, and implementation of experiential and educational programs and initiatives. This position will develop and maintain a strong student team through intentional advising, ongoing training, and committee work.

The Associate Director works closely with campus and community partners to create high-quality and positive engagement experiences and to support students as they transition to life on campus, establish foundations for success, and cultivate community.

Required Education/Experience/Skills
  • Masters Degree in Higher Education or related field
  • 3 or more years of experience in higher education setting
  • 3 or more years of experience advising and/or supervising students

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
  • Experience: Advising and supervising student leaders, collaborating effectively, planning and implementing programs, developing and executing student leader training, coordinating community engagement, student leadership, and/or orientation initiatives in a higher education environment.
  • Personal qualities: Proven integrity and trustworthiness; a self-starter with a sense of urgency, outstanding organizational skills, strong work ethic, and the ability to adapt to changing and sometimes ambiguous circumstances in a highly collaborative academic environment; a genuine care for and enjoyment of young people and of college students; desire to play a key and visible role in the life of the campus; excellent listening skills and the ability to embrace feedback and incorporate constructive criticism; a high level of energy, resilience, self-confidence, a positive "can-do" attitude, and charisma; a sense of humor.
  • Vision and planning: Ability to understand, communicate, and manage the complex interplay of student engagement, leadership development, community engagement, and student success.
  • Management expertise: Ability to recruit and develop exceptional leaders, develop trust and strong collaborative working relationships; experience nurturing, motivating, and empowering students; capacity for authentic leadership and a genuine appreciation for the holistic college student experience.
  • Technological savvy: An understanding of technology that can achieve efficiencies and the strategic use of digital communications and social media to advance student engagement and success.
  • Exceptional communication skills: Superior presentation skills including the presence to interact effectively with a wide array of constituents; a talent for making appropriate connections among various stakeholders and nurturing strong and long-lasting individual and institutional relationships; ability to write and speak clearly and compellingly and to deliver an effective, coherent and consistent message; a communication style that is open and engaging.
  • Commitment to public education and a passion for liberal arts and sciences: Recognition of the important place that the North Carolina System of Higher Education holds in American higher education; deep appreciation for the value of liberal arts and sciences education; and skill in creating excitement about the mission, vision, programs, and fundamental strengths of UNC Asheville.
