The UNC Asheville New Media Department recognizes animation’s vast and evolving nature, encompassing traditional hand-drawn, stop-motion, 3D, experimental, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and AI-assisted techniques. As part of the Division of Natural Sciences, we embrace interdisciplinary exploration, blending old and new technologies to push creative boundaries.
We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar with a strong record in animation who can inspire students through skill-building, experimentation, and mentorship. The ideal candidate will stimulate innovation across all levels, encouraging students to explore and redefine animation’s possibilities. We invite applications from candidates passionate about shaping the next generation of animators in a collaborative and forward-thinking environment.
- An accomplished skill set in animation (3D and 2D, stop motion, or others).
- Terminal degree (MFA or equivalent industry/professional experience) in animation and/or 3D digital modeling, including software expertise (Autodesk Maya, Adobe Creative Suite, Toon Boom, Unreal Engine, Unity).
- Ability to teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced animation, 3D digital modeling (Maya), and game development/digital storytelling to New Media majors and non-majors, as well as introductory and senior-level studio classes.
- Knowledge of innovations and trends in the fields of animation and new media.
- Ability to contribute to the vibrancy of an established and growing new media program, participate in gallery exhibitions, and contribute to admissions and university-wide events.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching undergraduate students.
- Experience with game development and/or digital storytelling.
- Experience using motion capture.
- Knowledge of artificial intelligence as it pertains to image making and animation.
- Creative computer programming for animation.
