Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director’s Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department’s guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs and Strategic Communications, the Director of Special Projects/Communications will be a vital part of formulating, planning, sharing and amplifying the story of the Department of Athletics at Carolina while leading special projects for the department. It will also support internal communications, content creation, NIL communications and revenue generation for the department. Will lead special projects and events and contribute to communications, creative and marketing efforts, and it will work closely with the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs and Strategic Communications, the Director off Athletics and the External Communications (Athletic Communications, Marketing, Go Heels Productions, Creative Services) units to ensure a positive public presentation and brand projection of Carolina Athletics. Projects assigned by the Senior Associate AD include coordinating the annual RAMMY Awards and planning and executing the annual UNC Sport and Entertainment Summit. This position will also serve as brand manager for the social media of the Director of Athletics and assist with overall social media and content efforts of the department with the authority to create and post content to the department’s social media channels, GoHeels.com website and CarolinaNIL.com website. It will assist with internal communications including presentations, all-staff communications and meetings and scripts. The person in this role must be creative, confidential, an excellent communicator and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Strong writing, social media, marketing, digital and content creation skills, as well as experience creating and editing internal and executive communications and presentations. Ability to present clear and accurate information strategically. Ability to meet tight deadlines, and plan and manage multi-faceted and specialized projects. Demonstrated presentation skills, including the ability to create and edit presentations using PowerPoint and other software. Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and Excel, and must have experience in video editing. Ability to manage multiple projects at once. Must be creative, flexible, and a strong team player. Confidentiality and the ability to work independently will be key.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Master’s degree preferred. Experience working in Division I College Athletics preferred.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to move/lift 25 lbs or greater. May be required to navigate stairs. Able to manage a fast-paced, high-volume work environment. Attention to detail essential. Ability to work nights and weekend when necessary.
