Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) oversees, develops, supports, and grows UNC-Chapel Hill’s $1 billion research enterprise. The offices reporting to the OVCR set strategic priorities for research, manage proposals and awards, provide research infrastructure, identify funding opportunities, develop research teams and partnerships, oversee regulatory compliance, and communicate the impact and value of the University’s research enterprise. The OVCR enables research endeavors for faculty, students, and scholars; encourages interdisciplinary research collaboration across campus; and fosters expansion and diversification of the University’s sponsored research portfolio by collaborating with foundations, federal agencies, corporations, and the state and federal governments. The Vice Chancellor for Research also oversees multiple pan-University, multidisciplinary research centers and institutes.
Position Summary
The Research Data Security Professional works collaboratively with the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Research to develop, operate, and manage effective research information security practices and compliance in support of the University’s research enterprise. This position will ensure that the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research follows best security technology practices and will stay abreast of changing legislative requirements and mandates as it relates to research.

- Design, implement, and maintain security frameworks to safeguard research data throughout its lifecycle.
- Conduct regular security assessments of research data systems, identifying vulnerabilities and recommending mitigation strategies.
- Work closely with researchers to understand the security needs of their projects and provide tailored solutions.
- Stay informed of emerging trends, technologies, and threats in research data security and incorporate them into institutional practices.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Masters and 5 years’ experience; or Bachelors and 6 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Strong knowledge of data security frameworks, standards, and regulations relevant to research data.
- Proficiency in risk assessment, vulnerability management, and incident response.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to convey complex security concepts to non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Experience with data security in a research or academic environment is highly preferred.
- 7 years of experience in data security.
