Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The LGBTQ Center works to foster a safer and more inclusive environment for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions by allocating resources across three broad areas: 1) Education 2) Direct Support and Advocacy, and 3) Community Building. Specifically we provide: programming and workshops designed to enhance a climate of equality, understanding and respect; advocacy and support for students, faculty and staff of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions; resources, referrals and consultation services related to sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression for interested students, faculty and staff; trainings, materials and programs for academic units, administrative departments, and community partners. The LGBTQ Center pursues this work with a commitment to universal design principles and attention to intersectionality.

Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

UNC LGBTQ Center seeks an energetic professional who has experience with LGBTQ communities to provide educational program facilitation, community building program planning and implementation, student services, and outreach. The Assistant Director of the LGBTQ Center reports to the Director. The position has two major components. First, coordinating and implementing Safe Zone and other educational programs. Second, coordinating and implementing the undergraduate social and community building programs, Lavender Graduation, and Pride Week at Carolina. Program planning includes collaboration with student leaders, LGBTQ Center Ambassadors and other employees. The assistant director meets with students in groups or 1:1 to provide mentoring and support upon request. The person in this position is responsible for keeping the required assessment documentation and records current. The work schedule is variable according to programming and departmental needs but is typically 12p-9p Monday-Friday. On rare occasions (e.g., Lavender Graduation) weekend work is required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Administrative and programmatic experience in a similar setting.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate effects of various systems of oppression (e.g., racism, ableism, sexism, heterosexism, classism).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement services and programs that address intersections of identity.
  • Unwavering commitment to the highest of ethical standards and professional integrity.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience in the development, execution and evaluation of curriculum and programming, particularly for various communities within the higher education environment.
  • Experience working with diverse undergraduate and graduate/professional student, faculty, or staff communities, which reflect an array of ethnic, racial, cultural, faith, gender, and other identities.
  • Active participation in national professional associations.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
