Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director's Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department's guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.

The Media Relations unit within the Department of Athletics is responsible for the promotion and coordination of all media relations. The purpose of this department is to inform, engage and excite the Carolina Athletics' fanbase, generate revenue through ticket sales and sponsorship and assist Carolina's athletic programs in their efforts to recruit student-athletes. The Media Relations unit will serve as a hub for all communications and media distribution and will interface with various internal and external constituencies including, but not limited to, Creative Services, Marketing and Promotions, Go Heels Productions, sport programs, Tar Heels Sports Properties, the Ticket Office and The Rams Club.

The Media Relations group will be a leader in college athletics in innovative content generation, technology adoption and communication platforms.
Position Summary
The Associate Director, Communications and Content Creation will be responsible for the ideation, capture, creation and distribution of all creative content related to the assigned Olympic sports program, making direct decisions that will promote and protect Carolina's image and brand. The person in this position will work directly with assigned teams and coaches to advise coaches and student-athletes on communications strategies, including public remarks to media and fans that will have a direct impact on the image of Carolina Athletics and the University. This position will coordinate with the Media Relation unit, Creative Services unit, and other External Communications units and sports staff, to identify the creative communication strategies for the assigned programs with the guiding principles of increasing reach, assisting recruiting and driving revenue. This position will work on a daily basis within the Media Relations unit to serve as a brand manager and the primary point-of-contact with the local and national media. This position will be responsible for brainstorming, producing and pitching stories of Carolina Athletics in video, graphic and/or written form. This position also will be responsible for creating and distributing various content - including web stories, social media graphics and posts. This position will develop, champion and defend Carolina branding and positioning in all multimedia platforms. This position will be responsible for ensuring that content and messaging meets the standards of the Department of Athletics and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including compliance rules. The person in this position must be able to handle sensitive and controversial issues, represent UNC publicly, run news conferences and create content - usually on tight deadlines.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Must demonstrate exceptional customer service as this position will have extensive inter-personal dealings with student-athletes, coaches and administrators from within athletics and the University, as well members of the media and other external audiences. Must be creative and have strong content-creation skills. Must demonstrate the ability to deal with stressful and changing situations. Much time will be spent in front of a computer, going to games and possibly requiring out-of-town travel. Must be innovative. Must have strong IT skills and be able to navigate arenas, stadiums and press boxes. Must meet deadlines and follow all compliance rules. Valid NC Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer Bachelor's degree in communications/journalism or other related field and experience in an athletic sports information environment. Master's Degree preferred, but not mandatory. Experience in college athletics content creation at the Division I level helpful. This experience would include graphics design experience, video content acquisition and editing, still and motion graphics creation and social media distribution expertise.Knowledge of and compliance with NCAA, ACC and institutional rules that relate to this position.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must demonstrate the ability to lift boxes, set up computers, and navigate stadiums, arenas and press boxes. Must demonstrate the ability to concentrate, and display poise in a difficult or stressful situation. Night work, Weekend work,
