Primary Purpose of Department
  • The University Center for Academic Excellence (UCAE) provides academic support services and resources that increase learning effectiveness, enhance student success, and promote academic excellence. These high-quality support services include course-based assistance, academic skill development, and support for academically at-risk students.
  • The UCAE collaborates with departments and programs across campus to assist students in achieving their academic potential. Our programs and services are continuously improved through routine examination of student learning outcomes, program and service evaluations, and strategic goals.
  • Within the UCAE, the Student Success team specifically leads efforts to support academically at-risk students including those on academic probation and reinstated from academic suspension.
Primary Purpose of Position
  • The Associate Director for Student Success leads programs within the UCAE focused on the success and retention of academically at-risk students. This includes the 49er Rebound program and its options: UCOL 1300 Academic Success Seminar, UCOL 1305 49er Focus, and Students Obtaining Success (SOS) Peer Mentoring.
  • The Associate Director focuses on developing strategies to help at-risk students learn the skills and strategies necessary to succeed in courses, attain academic success, and progress to graduation.
  • The Associate Director is a member of the Senior Staff of the UCAE, providing leadership to a range of programs and services.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Academic Recovery Responsibilities
  • Lead the 49er Rebound program to support 1,200 academically at-risk students each semester including strategic planning, assessment, and logistics.
  • Lead outreach and interventions for students on academic probation and reinstated from suspension.
  • Oversee the curriculum development and administration of UCOL 1300 and UCOL 1305.
  • Oversee the operations of the SOS Peer Mentoring program.
  • Teach UCOL 1300 or 1305 as needed
  • Supervise two professional staff members, three Graduate Teaching Assistants, and 30 undergraduate peer mentors

Learning Center Responsibilities
  • Direct the UCAE's efforts to improve retention and overall student success through committee work, task forces, and projects determined on an annual basis.
  • Support initiatives that enhance the teaching and learning process.
  • Develop and deliver trainings, workshops, and class content in support of programs and services.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master's degree in higher education, counseling, or related discipline required.
  • Experience with program development, administration, and assessment required.
  • Minimum five years of experience working in college/university setting or transferable experience necessary.
  • Experience with academic support programs, retention programs, and work with at-risk students strongly preferred.
  • Supervision and training experience required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and analysis skills, essential.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Education, licensure, and/or experience in college student mental health and case management.
  • Familiarity with short-term intervention modalities such as Solution-Focused Brief Therapy or Motivational Interviewing.
  • Detailed understanding of academic standing and readmission policies at UNC Charlotte.
  • Teaching experience at the college level in the field of life and career planning, first-year experience, student success strategies, and/or academic recovery skills.
  • Experience with change management and collaboration in launching new, large-scale initiatives.
