Brief Summary of Work for this Position
This Interior Designer performs purchasing and interior design work to enhance the function, safety, and aesthetics of interior spaces. The position develops interior design schemes that incorporate the optimum space utilization and building function with the departmental needs. Work involves determining the client’s needs in conjunction with the university’s guidelines and standards; formulating a design plan and budget; specifying materials, finishes, and furnishings; developing a timeline for the project, and coordinating contractor schedules to ensure timely completions. The position may supervise subordinate personnel in the preparation of paste-ups, layouts, requisitions, and bid invitations. Work involves contact with engineers, planners, facilities staff, architects, building contractors, administrators, departmental officials, and vendors on purchasing and design problems, procurement of goods, and installation of furnishings. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative superior to ensure conformance with established policies and procedures.
This position is charged with direct project management responsibilities for ensuring that formal and informal (>
500,000 and < $500,000 respectively) interior design and construction projects are completed on time and within established budgets while ensuring the capital improvement to the University’s facilities meets Federal, state and local building codes as well as University requirements with minimal disruption to ongoing University activities. As an interior designer, this position is tasked with managing interior design projects, ranging from a few thousand dollars to more than $500,000 per project. Interior design projects can be large scale and may be valued up to several million dollars, can be complex and technical in nature and involve those modifications to the interior building environment requiring funding to implement. Projects may vary from new construction to minor renovations of the campus’ facilities. This position has direct responsibility for project management during the design phase. This includes designer and construction manager selection, contract negotiation and administration, coordination of design with university and state stakeholders, budget management, schedule management, bid and award. This position requires the ability to anticipate issues and formulate options to resolve them; manage multiple projects; prioritize projects; use goals to guide actions and create detailed action plans; and schedule people and tasks to achieve goals with minimal oversight.
- This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor’s degree in art, interior design, or related discipline and experience in large-scale interior design; or equivalent combination of training and experience. - Bachelor’s degree in interior design or architecture.
- Certified interior designer National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ).
- Three (3) years of progressive interior design and construction experience.
- Proficient knowledge of standard design and construction practices and have both office and field experience.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to proficiently operate electronic devices (personal computers, smart phones, tablets, etc.) and a variety of software for e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databases and information collection.
- Working knowledge of AUTOCAD, Microsoft Office, MS Teams, MS Project, and Bluebeam or equivalent software products.
Required Certifications or Licensures Valid driver’s license : Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained. Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The Office of Facilities provides the full complement of services necessary to maintain the facilities and systems of the university. We are charged to maintain the aesthetically pleasing Georgian appearance of the core campus and manage the support of all university property through our departments of HUB (Historically Underutilized Businesses), Project Management, Architectural & Construction Services, Physical Plant, Utilities and Engineering Services, and Facilities Administration. The UNCW Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs, the Chancellor, and the Board of Trustees, along with the laws and regulations of the University of North Carolina and State of North Carolina, govern the Office of Facilities.
The 225 positions of the Office of Facilities service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research / administrative space and over 1,621 acres of land and associated infrastructure. The Office of Facilities provides design and construction services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to State and Federal codes, regulations, and guidelines while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.
The primary purpose of the Architectural and Construction Services (ACS) department unit is to support education, research, expansion, and other activities of the University through timely and economical completion of design, construction, renovation and / or repair, and other improvements to the university’s facilities. Accordingly, ACS administers design and construction for formal capital improvement projects on behalf of the University, Endowment, and other university associated entities. Formal projects are defined by general statutes as being valued in excess of $500,000 and are subject to oversight by the System Office and / or the Office of State Construction and governed by the State Building Commission via legislative authority.
