Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the Physical Plant is to maintain the building, grounds, and infrastructure of the UNCW campus so that it is safe, reliable, clean, and attractive. This includes departments such as HVAC, Electric, Plumbing, Landscaping, Housekeeping, Motor Pool, Food Services Maintenance, Carpentry, Paint and Roofing, Fire Alarm and Physical Security and Access and Locksmith Services.

The Landscape Services Unit is part of the Physical Plant Department, Business Affairs Division. The unit provides support with maintenance, development and operation of all University grounds, performs skilled and semi-skilled duties in the maintenance and upkeep of landscape, roads, and parking areas.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Irrigation Specialist is responsible for managing the university’s irrigation system and ensuring the proficient and effective operation of this system.

Reponsibilities Include:
  • Directing all repairs for campus irrigation systems
  • Providing general maintenance of systems
  • Providing design and installation of new, in-house irrigation systems
  • Managing, coordinating and inspecting contracted installations
  • Conducting reviews of outside irrigation designers and delivering support to general grounds maintenance


This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow, ice and/or debris removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience
Horticulture knowledge specific to southeastern North Carolina.
