What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Specialist position at University of North Carolina Wilmington?
Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day operation of the Forensic Light Isotope and Trace Environmental Spectrometry (FLITES) core facility in concert with another research specialist. The research specialist is expected to train and supervise faculty and students on the correct operation of light stable isotope (H, C, N, O, S) instrumentation in the FLITES facility. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to maintain the instrumentation and affiliated supplies as well as provide data analysis and data management support, basic QA / QC protocols, and oversee lab safety protocols. This is a permanent, state-funded position.
The FLITES facility houses a variety of mass spectrometry including :
- One Thermo Orbitrap Exploris 240 mass spectrometer adapted for stable isotope measurements and interfaced with a Thermo Vanquish Neo UHPLC peripheral
- One Thermo Delta V stable isotope mass spectrometer interfaced with Thermo GC-IsoLink II and EA IsoLink peripheral devices
- One Thermo Delta V stable isotope mass spectrometer interfaced with GasBench II and Costech 4010 EA peripherals, and
- A Delta Q stable isotope mass spectrometer interfaced with GC-IsoLink II and Thermo Flash HT Plus peripherals.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment and 1 year of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of training and / or related experience.
