The candidate must hold, at minimum, a master's degree from an acceptable accredited institution in the field of instruction or closely related discipline at time of hire. Preferably has completed most or all of the requirements for the doctorate or equivalent. Must be able to demonstrate effectiveness in teaching.

General Description / Primary Purpose :

The Department of Art, Art History & Design is seeking a 9-month, non-tenure earning, Instructor of Graphic Design - Visual Media Specialist. This position will report to the Department Chair, Dr. Jenny Hager. Position responsibilities will include a 4 / 4 teaching load or its equivalent, and service to the department, college, and / or university.

The GD program seeks a Graphic Design Instructor to teach a combination of foundation-level design and digital imaging courses. The ideal candidate will be an image specialist, with a focus on the industry standard software (Adobe Creative Suite), printing methods, photography, and / or printmaking. Additionally, the candidate will be enthusiastic about collaborating with pre-majors to help them develop the fundamental skills necessary for success and advancement in the GD / Fine Arts programs. They will bring their own creative experience and professional expertise into the classroom and will be dedicated to integrating modern technology into the curriculum in innovative ways.

About the Department :

The University of North Florida's Department of Art, Art History, and Design is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The Department comprises seven major areas of undergraduate study : Art History (B.A.), Graphic Design (B.F.A.), and Fine Arts (B.F.A.) Ceramics, Painting / Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, and Sculpture. The Department expands learning opportunities for students and provides professional enrichment for faculty and staff through a partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Jacksonville, a cultural institute of UNF.

The Graphic Design degree is a competitive Selective Admissions B.F.A. program of study that prepares students for professional practice in visual communication. The curriculum emphasizes design process and principles, technical skills, and production methods, and research-driven problem-solving that considers social impact as well as commercial potential. Coursework focuses on print publications, branding and identity programs, typographic design, packaging, UI / UX, and screen-based experiences.

Required Qualifications :

  • Expert knowledge of technical software, design principles, typography, and layout are required as demonstrated by a creative portfolio.
  • Experience with industry-related work and teaching in two or more of the following areas : digital foundations, digital imagery, photography, photo retouching, print and prepress production, printmaking, and Risograph printing.
  • Candidates must show evidence of advanced technical and production skills using the most current Macintosh operating system, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other design-related software.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills are essential.
  • Qualified candidates will have an M.F.A. or terminal degree from an accredited institution in graphic design or a related field at the time of appointment in August of 2025.

Preferred Qualifications / Skills :

  • The ideal candidate will hold an M.F.A. from an accredited institution in graphic design or a related field
  • Two or more years of college-level teaching experience or graphic design industry work experience
  • Excel in image making (photography, digital design, printmaking) or other related techniques
  • Experience with typography, publication design, and design principles is a plus
  • The department is seeking a resolute colleague to assist with continuing excellence and growth of the program.
