The following opportunities are available at the University of Northern Iowa Foundry 4.0 and Metal Casting Centers. Summer interns will be assigned tasks based on their experience, interests conveyed during interviews and the needs of the Centers.
LAB ASSISTANT - FOUNDRY 4.0 CENTER
Summer Lab Assistants Will Support Applied Research Project Activities Under The Guidance And Direction Of The Project Director, Project Engineers And Research Associates. Hands On, Real World Experience In Mold/core And Tooling Design And Process Simulation In Support Of Accelerating The Adoption Of Manufacturing 4.0 Technologies In The Metal Casting Industry. Position Activities May Include The Following
LAB ASSISTANT - METAL CASTING CENTER
Launch your career in Metal Casting by gaining hands-on experience with several related technologies at the Metal Casting Center! The Metal Casting Center, located on-campus at the Department of Technology, is a world-renowned independent Research & Development facility geared towards characterization of materials, and development of processes and technologies for the Metal Casting Industry. With facilities including analytical equipment and a fully operating foundry, the MCC provides excellent learning opportunities for student employees interested in the Manufacturing industry.
Responsibilities
Summer Lab Assistants will support the research and testing activities at the Metal Casting Center under the guidance and direction of MCC staff. Job responsibilities and activities related to this position may include:
Current student attending an accredited university plus interest in foundry industry, automation, robotics or additive manufacturing required.

- Conduct testing using standard testing methodologies to characterize samples for physical and mechanical properties.
- Utilize equipment and processes related to Metal Casting to assist in completing private and government projects.
- Utilize power tools and equipment, as required, under the guidance of MCC Staff.
- Work with analytical equipment for characterization of materials for thermal and chemical properties, including equipment for thermophysical and chemical analysis.
- Assist the MCC Staff in operating and maintaining a safe and hazard free work environment.
