Position Overview
The Custodial Team Lead is a full-time position, responsible for the overall cleanliness of University buildings according to established standards. Supervise and coordinate activities of employees engaged in custodial/receiving dock responsibilities.
What will I do in this position?
Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Hire service associates, train service associates on proper cleaning procedures, and direct service associates.
- Conduct performance appraisals. Perform routine quality inspections of completed work for conformance to standards.
- Manage daily employee work schedules to ensure completion of routine tasks. Monitor and record employee scheduled work hours to control department costs.
- Ensure that staff is performing duties in a safe and efficient manner and that chemicals and equipment are properly used.
- Sweep, mop, scrub and vacuum assigned areas. Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows and sills as needed. Transport trash, recycling and waste to disposal areas. Replenish bathroom supplies.
- Transport small equipment, tools, furniture and other items between departments and buildings. Set-up tables and chairs in rooms as requested.
- Operate and maintain all department equipment.
- Ensure that all custodial-related customer needs and requests while on duty are addressed in a timely and professional manner; respond to emergency cleaning requests.
- Plan and coordinate special cleaning projects throughout the year.
- Communicate with supervisor regarding cleaning needs and potential issues.

Secondary job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Clean snow and debris from sidewalks as necessary.
- Participate in continuing education and training activities as requested by supervisor.
- Assist with miscellaneous department duties as needed.
What will it take to succeed in this position?
Minimum Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED, required
- Previous supervisor experience, preferred
- Continually nurture a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; serve as a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern’s mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and equipment operation
- Ability to work as member of a team and maintain a positive attitude
- Ability to interact with a variety of individuals in a professional, courteous and tactful manner
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license
- Ability to obtain and maintain required blood borne pathogens and other safety certifications
- Ability to work a rotating weekend day and on-call as needed
- Basic computer proficiency
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
