Notre Dame's distinctive residential model has long stood at the heart of the undergraduate education and experience. Grounded in the University's Catholic character and Holy Cross mission, Notre Dame's single-sex, mixed-class, and randomly assigned residence halls and other residential communities support students' holistic formation and development in the context of a supportive community.
The Associate Vice President for Residential Life (AVP-RL) reports directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs and provides strategic campus leadership for all established and emerging residential life services. This includes residential communities, programs, and other services offered to the more than 6,600 students who reside on-campus, and select resources for the more than 2,000 undergraduate students and 4,000 graduate and professional students residing off-campus.
The AVP-RL establishes strategic direction and leads a dynamic team of 33 residential communities, housing operations, and five directors responsible for functional areas of Residential Education; Strategic Partnerships and Assessment; Recruitment, Hiring, and Retention; Training and Development; and Housing Operations. The AVP-RL is responsible for shepherding the vibrant residential communities; promoting student belonging, well-being, and formation in the residential setting; and stewarding the physical facilities where students live-including serving as a lead on the University's residential life master planning committee.
The AVP-RL also shares responsibility with other Associate Vice Presidents and leaders in Student Affairs for integrating students' academic and co-curricular education and experiences; promoting the holistic flourishing, formation, and development of every student, and stewarding the University's Catholic, Holy Cross mission within Student Affairs.
- The AVP reports directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs, serves on the Vice President's Leadership team, is an integral member of the Division's strategic planning efforts, and takes on additional Division-wide special projects as necessary.
- Oversees the Residential Life Leadership Team and actively increases the flow of information and communication between rectors, the housing operations team, directors of residential life and campus partners, internal and external to the Division of Student Affairs; collaborates with the leadership team to establish standard operating procedures and identify best practices for Residential Life; and serves in a tiered, emergency on-call system for the Division of Student Affairs responsible for responding to student emergencies and supporting and advising Hall Staff in crisis situations.
- Prepare, oversee, and assess a comprehensive strategic plan and vision for residential life that spans the responsibilities and individual expertise of creating formational opportunities and flourishing communities within each residential hall, overseeing the recruitment, hiring, professional development and retention of a thriving professional and student residential teams, thoughtfully developing strategic partnerships both internal and external to the Division, communicating to internal and external constituents, and administering to the facility and operational needs of residential life.
- Collaborate with other Associate and Assistant Vice Presidents and leaders in Student Affairs to (a) advance the integration of learning inside and outside the classroom by developing strong relationships with members of the Notre Dame community and designing and implementing programs that integrate the work of Academic and Student Affairs; (b) promote the well-being and success of all students residing in on-campus residential communities and those who have transitioned off-campus; and provide strong and effective stewardship of the University's Catholic, Holy Cross mission as it is manifested in the University's residential system.
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires knowledge of, adherence to, and the ability to articulate and explain the principles of Notre Dames Catholic, Holy Cross mission, traditions, and values.
Five plus years of experience in higher education: setting unit, departmental and program objectives, including student learning outcomes, within strategic planning goals. Strong oral, written, and digital communications skills.
Requires experience and knowledge of best practices in residential life, residential education, housing operations and community living issues and concerns among college and university students. Experience in planning, designing, and implementing residential programs and services for students in higher education.
Ability to work strategically and cooperatively in a team environment. Conscientious management of confidential and sensitive information with integrity and caution. Ability to manage complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously, mixing long term projects with urgent or immediate demands. Ability to work effectively in and manage ambiguous or uncertain situations.
High standard of excellence for self and others. Ability to collaborate with and achieve results through the work of others. Effectiveness in developing and sustaining strong working relationships with other senior staff members. Demonstrated management skills and the ability to lead programs and staff members.
Strong ability to develop and sustain strategic partnerships and relationships within and outside of Student Affairs and the University, and ability to represent unit vision and priorities to internal and external stakeholders.
