We are seeking an experienced and passionate Lead Theatre Technician to join the College of Arts and Letters. This individual will play a vital role in delivering exceptional production support for theatrical, musical theatre, opera, and festival performances, while mentoring students and supporting guest artists and designers.
About The Position
The Lead Theatre Technician will be responsible for the technical execution and oversight of theatrical productions, with duties tailored to the candidate’s background and expertise. Reporting to the Production Manager, this position ensures the successful operation of lighting, and audio elements throughout the production process—from design to final performance.
The technician will collaborate closely with directors, designers, faculty, and students across multiple departments, including Theatre/Musical Theatre, Opera, and the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival.
This position combines hands-on technical work with leadership, mentorship, and project management responsibilities, offering a unique opportunity to shape both productions and the next generation of theatre artists.

Key Responsibilities
Lighting & Sound Management
- Supervise and execute all load-ins and load-outs.
- Install and circuit lighting and audio equipment according to production plots.
- Serve as or train board operators for live performances.
- Design or support the design of lighting and sound elements.
- Troubleshoot and repair equipment, including soundboards, microphones, light boards, and light fixtures.
- Maintain and manage lighting and sound systems and equipment inventories.
- Wire practical and scenic pieces as required.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and conduct pre-performance technical checks.
- Identify and manage materials and supplies within designated budgets.
- Train and mentor student crews on technical theatre practices.
- Provide meaningful, hands-on educational experiences.
- Support students receiving academic credit or employment through production work.
- Work with the Production Manager and creative teams to define project priorities and manage timelines.
- Independently oversee specific productions or technical projects.
- Coordinate production schedules across departments and performance venues.
- Attend and contribute to all design and production meetings.
- Provide cost estimates and source vendors as needed.
- Offer technical support across all production needs within the College of Arts & Letters.
- Assist with other duties as assigned to contribute to the success of the college’s performance initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Technology, Lighting or Sound Design, Audio Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in technical theatre, with demonstrated proficiency in lighting and sound.
- Strong understanding of lighting and sound design, systems, and equipment.
- Proficiency with installation and patching of equipment including QLab, digital snakes, lighting consoles, and microphones.
- Working knowledge of audio and electrical theory.
- Experience with Vectorworks or other CAD software.
- Skilled in diagnosing and repairing theatrical equipment.
- Strong communication and supervisory abilities.
- Experience managing concurrent projects with strict deadlines.
- Commitment to working in an inclusive, collaborative environment.
- Ability to lift and carry 30–100 lbs.
- Comfortable working at heights (e.g., 60 feet on stage grids or lifts).
- Ability to bend, stoop, and climb frequently.
- Able to stand for extended periods in low-light or noisy environments during rehearsals and performances.
