The Franco Family Institute for Liberal Arts and the Public Good is seeking an Outreach Specialist to play a pivotal role in advancing the Institute's mission to foster public engagement and amplify the impact of research in the liberal arts. In this position, the Outreach Specialist will collaborate closely with faculty, students, and external partners to design accessible and inclusive programming, facilitate workshops, develop outreach materials, and lead efforts to promote and expand the reach of publicly engaged research. This role will report directly to the Managing Director of the Franco Family Institute.
About the Institute:
After 40 years of supporting faculty research, hosting compelling speakers, fostering student research, and convening interdisciplinary conferences, the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts (ISLA) at the University of Notre Dame is being reimagined as the Franco Family Institute for Liberal Arts and the Public Good. This transformation presents a unique opportunity to leverage Notre Dame's strengths in the humanities and build a dynamic connection with South Bend and the surrounding region, while continuing its commitment to excellence in the liberal arts. The Institute's new direction aims to create a hub for public engagement and academic collaboration, setting a model for higher education institutions more broadly.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Programming:
- Assist in the planning and facilitation of public-facing programs, ensuring they are accessible and impactful.
- Lead the planning of an annual, signature public symposium, including theme development, speaker coordination, and event promotion.
Training & Support:
- Advise faculty, students, and staff on best practices for publicly engaged scholarship.
- Design and lead workshops to help participants develop publicly engaged research projects.
- Provide direct support to faculty and students in translating and disseminating their research to diverse audiences.
Outreach:
- Manage local and international outreach efforts, including media partnerships, newsletters, and promotional materials.
- Develop and implement strategies to reach diverse constituencies through various digital and print platforms.
- Create and maintain web content to highlight Institute initiatives and funded projects.
Reporting & Evaluation:
- Design metrics to track and measure engagement and impact of Institute programs.
- Advise the director and managing director on strategic planning for publicly engaged initiatives.
- Contribute to development and stewardship activities as needed.
Partnerships:
- Collaborate with college and university units to foster community and public partnerships that elevate research and creative work. Work closely with faculty and students to develop equitable and impactful publicly engaged projects.
Please note: This is a five-year, limited-term position. Contingent on funding, the position may be extended.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree with 1-2 years of related experience
Skills:
- Familiarity with publicly engaged scholarship in the liberal arts.
- Public relations, marketing, communications or similar outreach skills.
- Excellent oral and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to work both collaboratively and individually.
Preferred Skills:
- Academic background in the arts or humanities.
- Public humanities experience.
