University of Notre Dame
Notre Dame, IN Full Time
POSTED ON 3/1/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/26/2025
The Technology and Digital Studies Program at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a Postdoctoral Teaching Scholar position. This two-year appointment focuses on teaching and mentoring undergraduate students in the program and participating in the scholarly community at Notre Dame. The Program prepares undergraduate students to be well rounded leaders in an increasingly technological world by integrating computational and analytic skills with an understanding of the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of technology and digital cultures. Housed in the College of Arts and Letters (the liberal arts college), the program has an emphasis on the intersection of computer science, data science, and digital studies with liberal arts disciplines. More information is available at altech.nd.edu.

Responsibilities

  • Teach three (3) undergraduate courses per semester, plus one (1) summer course, in the Technology and Digital Studies Program, including core courses and electives aligned with the scholar's areas of expertise in AI, data science, and digital studies. Key courses include Elements of Computing I and II, Introduction to Data Science, and electives focused on generative AI, computing and technology ethics, and human-computer interaction broadly conceived. Given the highly interdisciplinary nature of the program, faculty work in a mix of team-teaching and individual teaching assignments, as would the Teaching Scholar.
    • After a reduced load in the first semester, we anticipate that the Teaching Scholar will teach three courses per semester plus a summer course.
  • Develop new courses and update existing curriculum to keep pace with the rapidly evolving technology landscape.
  • Participate in program-related service activities and events.
  • While there are no research productivity requirements, the Teaching Scholar would be encouraged to participate in the vibrant academic community at Notre Dame focused on the areas of scholarship most germane to their interests.
Context And Support

The Technology and Digital Studies Program collaborates with other organizations across the University to grow and sustain a highly interdisciplinary and supportive academic ecosystem. Partners include Notre Dame Learning, which supports teaching excellence across the University, as well as the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society, the Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values, the Navari Family Center for Digital Scholarship and other programs in the Hesburgh Library, along with the Center for Research Computing and other departments, centers, and institutes. Notre Dame promotes a number of strategic initiatives aligned with the program including Data and Computational Science, the Ethics and the Common Good Initiative, and areas of application including Poverty and Democracy. The Program is closely aligned with the work of the College of Arts & Letters Office of Digital Strategy. More information can be found at https://strategicframework.nd.edu/initiatives/.
