Department Summary

Services for Student-Athletes provides comprehensive academic support to more than 500 student-athletes attending the University of Oregon. The department is open 7 days a week providing services such as class scheduling and advising, advanced learning assistance for underprepared and disabled learners, tutor appointments, Math and Science lab, quiet study tables and computer labs with Internet, printing and scanning services.

Position Summary

Learning Specialists provide intensive academic support to an assigned group of identified student-athletes, some of whom have diagnosed learning disabilities. The Learning Specialist will provide support to a caseload of students from all sports, working with students one-on-one and in small groups, re-teaching course content (when appropriate), assisting with skill development by teaching study skills, and promoting academic engagement and motivation. The Learning Specialist will assess and evaluate the student's academic needs to determine the necessity for additional academic support and create and maintain individual student progress reports. The Learning Specialist will communicate regularly on the progress of the students to academic support staff, including tutors, advisors, and other learning specialists. The Learning Specialist will also communicate regularly with the Compliance group within the University Athletic Department as well as any team academic support staff within the Athletic Department.

The Learning Specialist will be asked to perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Associate Director(s) of Services for Student Athletes. The Learning Specialist must be willing to work in person in an office environment during regular open hours on a year-round schedule, with occasional evenings and weekends as the academic needs of students demands. This position is also occasionally responsible for on-campus recruiting of student-athletes as requested, including campus tours and Jaqua hosted events. They oversee and provide necessary support to student athletes, such as coordinating academic resources, tutoring, exam preparation, critical reading and writing, time management, organization skills, etc. Learning Specialists identify individual student needs and promote continued refinement of study skills, such as critical reading, test taking and note taking.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree or equivalent combination of education, experience, and skills.
  • Experience providing individual tutoring support, study skills assistance, time management strategies or other learning support instruction to high school or college students.
  • Experience working with students experiencing academic challenges for any reason, including but not limited to, a lack of academic preparation, skills, or motivation, or a diagnosed learning disability, Attention Deficit Disorder, etc.

Professional Competencies

  • Sensitivity to, respect for, and understanding of educational and social developmental needs of student athletes.
  • Ability to help students with motivation and engagement around academics.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Strong writing skills including spelling and grammar.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in an academic field
  • One year of experience working with student athletes at a post-secondary level.
  • Appropriate credentials for evaluating and coordinating services for students with documented learning disabilities.
  • Teaching experience in an academic discipline that complements the areas of focus of the existing staff OR meets the needs of student athletes in high-demand tutor areas.
  • Experience working with students in multiple academic disciplines.
  • Experience working with academically underprepared students.
  • Familiarity with academic assessments, current educational research, and study skills strategies.
  • Working knowledge of NCAA academic regulations.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and / or experience serving the needs of diverse populations.
