Department Summary

Founded in 1960, the Robert D. Clark Honors College (CHC) is a liberal arts honors college within the University of Oregon. The College offers students a small liberal arts experience nested within a Research 1 institution. The CHC’s dynamic core education curriculum provides students a strong interdisciplinary foundation in the liberal arts, as well as a series of unique courses, including Calderwood Seminars in Public Writing and specialized 400-level colloquia. Run as seminars, CHC courses are writing and communication intensive and open only to honors college students. Courses are capped at 19 students, allowing for vibrant intellectual discussions, unique opportunities for pedagogical experimentation and rich faculty-student interaction.

Position Summary

The Clark Honors College (CHC) at the University of Oregon invites applications for a visiting instructor to join our growing, collaborative faculty community in Fall 2025. As part of our dynamic team, you will design and teach small interactive courses that spark intellectual curiosity across fields of inquiry and advise and mentor a cohort of curious and motivated undergraduate students. You will teach 7 courses across three quarters and have an advising load of no more than 20 students in their second year and above.

We are seeking an innovative, student-centered colleague who is committed to designing courses for CHC students from diverse academic backgrounds. The successful applicant will teach at least two different CHC courses of their own design that are grounded in their area of specialization but speak to a broad student audience. We welcome applicants from all disciplines within the natural sciences. We strongly encourage applicants who have worked with students from a variety of majors and backgrounds.

Minimum Requirements

Visiting faculty positions are intended for those who hold a similar or relevant appointment at another institution or who have recently obtained a terminal degree and are seeking further professional experience prior to seeking a professorship.

Additionally, candidates must have:

  • A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in social science discipline
  • Evidence of teaching excellence

Professional Competencies

  • Ability to contribute to the CHC through their understanding of the barriers facing first-generation students, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, people with disabilities, and other members of groups underrepresented in higher education (including DACA students), as evidenced by professional, life experiences, and/or educational background

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching core education or introductory courses in a liberal arts context
  • Experience with undergraduate advising and mentoring

All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
