What are the responsibilities and job description for the Locum Cardiologist position at University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine?
The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology seeks applications for a locum cardiologist. This is an opportunity for a 12-month locum starting in July 2025 to cover academic and maternity leaves within our group of 8 cardiologists at the General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital.
As one of our largest divisions, the Division of Cardiology spans The Ottawa Hospital and The University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Cardiologists located at General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital provide inpatient cardiology service at the General Campus and outpatient cardiology at the General and Riverside Campuses including shared coverage of non-invasive cardiac diagnostics. The UOHI is a large tertiary centre providing cardiovascular care to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The UOHI is Canada’s largest and foremost heart health centre. It employs over 1,400 physicians, nurses, researchers, technicians, allied health professionals and more. The Institute handles more than 235,000 patients yearly from across Canada. In addition, we have state-of-the-art catheterization and electrophysiology labs, a dedicated cardiac imaging facility with PET, MRI, CT, SPECT and echocardiography imaging.
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.
The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will have hospital privileges at The Ottawa Hospital. The incumbent will be responsible for in-patient and out-patient care, including 8 weeks of in-patient service, and shared call supported by residents who take first call. Out-patient care includes coverage of turn-key academic out-patient cardiology practice supported by a collegial group of cardiologists and a stellar administrative and clinical staff. Candidates will have access to a full range of non-invasive cardiac diagnostics including echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, holter and ECG reading. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in a variety of education opportunities and initiatives at the University of Ottawa.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; advanced training in echocardiography (level III or equivalent) is preferred; and, have or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of Lecturer or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French / English) candidate would be preferred.
The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums / stipends. Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.
