Job Description

Part-time Online Instructor (Remote): Health Care Innovation Lab Course

The University of Pennsylvania’s Master of Health Care Innovation (MHCI) invites applications for a part-time instructor for summer 2025. The instructor will collaborate with program staff and course assistants to customize and deliver a 4-week online lab course for MHCI students—Addressing Challenges—in which students will apply knowledge from their coursework in health policy, operations, behavioral economics, health equity, and more to an exigent problem in health care.

The MHCI forges a diverse network of innovative thinkers and leaders passionate about improving health care. The multidisciplinary faculty comprises leading experts from across Penn. Students apply their MHCI experience immediately in their work as clinicians, executives, researchers, entrepreneurs, consultants, and more. The program is based in the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy in the Perelman School of Medicine. We are profoundly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and are seeking candidates who support and foster this commitment.

Lab Overview

The lab instructor will provide guidance and facilitate synchronous and asynchronous collaboration online among health care professionals in various time zones, as they investigate, specify, and address a difficult challenge in health care. In small groups, students will work together to build background knowledge, analyze a market, build a business case, and create professionally relevant final deliverables intended to persuade funders and other decision makers to greenlight the project. Addressing Challenges runs July 8 to August 8, 2025. Learn more from the course page on improvinghealthcare.net.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with instructional designers to customize the lab course so that students may leverage your experience, expertise, and professional connections.
  • Provide meaningful and timely feedback, as well as grades, on assignments for up to 8 students, with a turnaround of fewer than 5 days.
  • Lead weekly online synchronous and asynchronous interactions with students.
  • Identify student needs and provide timely solutions in collaboration with course assistants and program staff.
  • Hold weekly virtual office hours to discuss students’ projects and answer questions.
  • Consult with students individually through email, telephone, or video conference with a typical turnaround of 1 day.
  • Manage, monitor, and advise a team of course assistants to ensure timely and high-quality grading, feedback, and student interactions.

Qualifications

  • A holistic view of the health care ecosystem, with experience leading or participating in health care innovation initiatives.
  • The ability to guide students through gathering background research for their projects, including (but not limited to) conducting online and library research.
  • A collaborative approach, and a willingness to expand students’ professional opportunities by connecting your network with the MHCI community.
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience as an instructor or student in courses with an online component is preferred.
  • A graduate degree in a related field and prior teaching experience are strongly preferred.

Work for the instructor position will be carried out remotely. This includes up to 20 hours between March and May, and 15 hours per week during the 4-week lab and the 2 weeks following. The position pays a stipend of $6,000 and does not include benefits. If you are interested, please use Workday to submit 1) your résumé/CV and 2) a cover letter briefly describing a great experience you have had—at work, in school, or elsewhere—working with a team: what 1 or 2 factors were most responsible for making it great, and how can you pass that on to students as they work in groups?

Applications are due by Friday, February 7.
