Job Description Summary

The research specialist will provide essential support to the Penn Equine Assisted Reproduction Laboratory. Responsibilities within the laboratory include performance of tests, equipment cleaning and maintenance, transport and handling of samples (follicular aspirates, semen samples, etc.), preparation of media and other general laboratory duties. Duties include data collection and evaluation as well as maintenance of laboratory records. The position involves work with live horses including handling, assisting with procedures, and sample collection. The laboratory will provide training in all areas. Some travel to the Philadelphia Penn campus may be required.This position may occasionally require coming in early or staying late to meet research project needs but hours will be adjusted accordingly.

Job Description

Job responsibilities include:

• Assist in research and clinical laboratory projects, including receiving and handling samples for shipment
• Participate in live horse research including horse handling, sample collection, assisting with procedures, monitoring/observation
• Perform tests to analyze sperm, oocytes, embryos and other biological material. Tests include computer-assisted sperm analysis, fluorescent staining, flow cytometry, etc., within the laboratory or in collaboration with other laboratories
• Perform and develop cell culture techniques, including semen preparation, oocyte handling and processing, etc.
• Data collection and analysis
• Organize and maintain laboratory, including records and equipment
• Perform other duties as assigned
  
  
  

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Two years or more of laboratory experience is preferred. Some experience with cell culture and molecular techniques such as immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry is preferred. Experience handling horses is also preferred.
