Penn Carey Law’s Biddle Law Library seeks intellectually curious applicants for two full-time Research & Instruction Librarian positions. The successful candidates will join a talented team of librarians dedicated to providing outstanding research support and educational programming at a highly collaborative law school that prides itself on cross-disciplinary studies. As the library expands its services to meet evolving needs, the selected candidates will focus on standard reference and research duties while also specializing in one of the following areas:

1. Foreign, comparative, and international legal research
2. Teaching credit-bearing legal research courses and developing co-curricular programming.
3. Emerging technologies in law librarianship, legal education, and law practice
4. Collection development
5. Support for data-intensive research

We have identified these areas as priorities, but we are open to candidates with other specialized expertise or interests that align with the library’s needs.

The Research & Instruction Librarians will report to the Head of Reference and Student Services. New librarians, including recent graduates and first-generation professionals, are encouraged to apply. Both positions are open to anyone with a JD degree who already has a master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS) or is willing to commit to completing the MLIS degree no later than 2.5 years after hiring.

  • Serve as a library liaison to provide personalized services to assigned faculty, including providing in-depth research support, identifying new resources, and offering current awareness services.
  • Provide reference and research assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors via telephone, email, chat, and in-person meetings.
  • Develop and provide specialized library services in one of the following areas: (1) foreign, comparative, and international legal research; (2) teaching credit-bearing legal research courses and developing/providing co-curricular educational programming; (3) working with emerging technology relevant to law librarianship, legal education, and law practice; (4) collection development; or (5) support of data-intensive research.
  • Participate in co-curricular instructional activities, including training for classes, clinics, and journals.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • JD from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited school of information or library science (preferred), current enrollment in master’s degree program in information or library science and completion of degree within two years of date of hire, or successful application to and enrollment in master’s degree program in information and library science within six months of date of hire and completion of program within two years of enrollment.
  • A strong service orientation.
  • Experience performing legal research in an academic, court, or law firm setting.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Librarian B: 2-3 years law library or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • Librarian C: 3-5 years law library or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • Experience in teaching, training, or instruction.
  • 2-3 years’ experience with emerging legal information technologies.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in legal practice.
