Job Description Summary

The Summer Teacher-Partners will provide direct instruction to students enrolled in the summer enrichment program in various subjects, including, but not limited to workready programming, English Language Arts, Responsive Math. Summer Teacher-Partners provide enthusiastic and educational direct service to K-12 students, and participate in planning lessons, activities, participating in reflective practice and assisting with management of necessary data collection. The position reports to the Site Director or Program Manager.

Job Description

Founded in 1992, the Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships is the University's primary vehicle for advancing civic and community engagement at Penn. It brings together the resources and assets of both the University and the wider community to help solve universal problems such as poverty, health inequities, environmental sustainability, and inadequate, unequal education as they are manifested in the University's local geographic area of West Philadelphia and Philadelphia at large. The Netter Center develops and helps implement democratic, mutually transformative, place-based partnerships between Penn and West Philadelphia that advance research, teaching, learning, practice, and service and improve the quality of life on campus and in the community. The Netter Center works with and serves as a model for other higher education institutions across the United States and around the world.

The Netter Center’s university-assisted community schools (UACS) is a strategy to educate, engage, empower, and serve all members of the community in which the school is located and engage students (K-16 ) in real world, community problem solving. UACS collaborates with partners to advance teaching, research, learning and service, as well as the civic development of their students. The Netter Center UACS implements summer enrichment and youth employment programs for West Philadelphia children and youth.

Compliance Requirements

Once or while you are completing the University of Pennsylvania onboarding process, you will need to complete additional documents that are largely required by Netter Center funders.

  • Act 168 UPENN Misconduct Form
  • Mandated Reporter Training - staff can be paid for the time to complete this once hired.
  • Confidentiality Statement
  • National Sex Offender Registry (NSOR)
  • UACS Staff Health Assessment - Please schedule a physical appointment with a medical professional and ask them to complete the form. This also requires a TB test result.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: BA, BS degree required
  • Able to be active with and constructively engage youth in a variety of activities
  • Knowledge of grade-level content, activities and curricula for students
  • Completion and passing of funder-required compliance documentation and all Federal and State background checks/clearances
  • Experience with working in School District of Philadelphia, urban settings and diverse student populations preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization and communication skills


Responsibilities

  • BE POSITIVE, HIGH ENERGY AND ENGAGING!!
  • Implement summer curriculum provided by the program; adapt as needed to meet students' needs and interests
  • Plan activities with other staff; prepare lessons
  • Attendance at all UACS staff trainings and meetings
  • Manage required paperwork as directed
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up of materials and equipment including preparing and securing instructional spaces (classrooms etc.)
  • Supervise and direct children according to site-specific and UACS expectations, rules and guidance
  • Be familiar with and strive to be in compliance with the Netter Center University-Assisted Community Schools and School Dist. Of Phila. Core Standards for Youth Programs
  • Other duties as assigned


Schedule

  • Varies - some average of 15 hours/week or 35 - 37 hours/week Monday - Friday 8:00AM – 4:00PM; 8:30AM - 5PM.
  • ALL STAFF MUST complete background clearances and funder-required compliance documentation by May 30, 2025.
  • Required training on Penn’s campus and at local West Phila. Public school sites from Monday 6/16/25 – Friday 6/20/25 from 8:30AM - 4PM (Thursday 6/19/25 the University is closed for Juneteenth holiday.)
  • There may be a virtual orientation session in early June, as schedules allow
  • 6-week Summer Enrichment Program runs from Monday 6/23/2025 - Friday 8/1/2025
    • Punctual and consistent attendance is required for this program.
  • There is no work on Friday 7/4 as the programs and University are closed.

Compensation

  • $30-40 per hour commensurate with experience
