The Head of the George M. Bevier Engineering Library is a faculty librarian in the University Library System (ULS) reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning. The position heads the Engineering Library, which also serves as the hub of library support for the sciences (including the natural sciences, mathematics, and computer science) on the University's main campus. The incumbent has responsibility for the library's operations, services, collections, and staff. The position also facilitates collection development for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines across the ULS and serves in a liaison role to the School of Engineering.

Responsibilities

Provide strategic leadership and vision for the library services in the disciplines served by the Engineering Library. Collaborate with relevant ULS colleagues to stay apprised of user and disciplinary needs, to develop or modify library services and collections, and to effectively promote and communicate library support to STEM constituencies across campus. Provide operational leadership for the Engineering Library and its staff, including supervision of the librarians and staff, responsive development of the library's collections and resources, and attention to the provision of services within the library to create consistently excellent user experiences.

Maintain a general liaison relationship with faculty members and students in the School of Engineering, and / or other science departments as assigned. The specific liaison role includes proactively building relationships and partnerships with faculty, staff, and students in the assigned departments; staying current with user needs; keeping the services and collections of the library responsive to change; promoting awareness and use of Library resources and support, including those in other library units and departments (e.g., Digital Scholarship Services, Archives & Special Collections); developing curricular and co-curricular engagement opportunities; and providing academic and research support for faculty and students.

Collaborate with the Associate University Librarian for Collections and Quality Assurance and other collections working group leaders to develop, implement, and maintain ULS general collections in assigned disciplinary and other areas. This responsibility includes working with other STEM liaisons to understand and respond to research trends, current and anticipated user needs, and library budget constraints; contributing to the development of methodologies for data analyses, evaluation of new resources, resource trials, and renewals, and monitoring trends in Open Access publishing trends. This work will include the development and application of assessment mechanisms for ULS general collections to inform decision making.

Librarians at the University of Pittsburgh are members of the faculty and are expected to demonstrate

continuous professional development in addition to performing their specific responsibilities. This

expectation includes such activities as participating in and contributing to departmental, library and

campus-wide committees or working groups as well as the profession at a regional, national, and / or

international level, maintaining a broad awareness of current and emerging issues that affect their

disciplines and areas of expertise, participating in relevant publishing and presentation opportunities, and pursuing knowledge of professional trends and developments that can be applied to evolving research, services, and collections. Approximately 10% of the librarian's time should be directed toward such activities and will be included as part of the annual evaluation.

Specifically, the incumbent in this position is expected to :

  • Keep abreast of and contribute as appropriate to current developments in the profession, especially as they relate to Science and Engineering librarianship.
  • Contribute to the profession through publications, presentations, teaching, and other professional activities.
  • Seek out appropriate roles in professional associations, research and / or publication on the regional, national and international level.
  • Participate actively in ULS and campus-wide working groups and committees, as appropriate.
  • The incumbent is also expected to contribute to the University community or the local community through service that utilizes their professional expertise.

Qualifications

A successful candidate for the Head of the Bevier Engineering Library will have the following required qualifications :

  • A master's degree from an ALA-accredited library / information sciences program, or another relevant advanced degree
  • At least two years of professional experience in a relevant setting. Experience may be in a library, or another setting related to research or instruction involving STEM disciplines.
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas : STEM information resources and research support strategies, scholarly communications, Open Science principles and workflows, research data management, student-centered instruction, library space and / or service design, grant-writing and project leadership
  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills
  • A record of professional engagement and contribution
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Prior managerial leadership experience and a desire to serve in a managerial leadership capacity
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field, Engineering preferred
  • Experience providing STEM services in a higher education setting
  • Evidence of strong commitment to user-centered library service and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing environment with a culturally diverse population.
  • Proven track record of cultural competence, understanding, and working with diverse racial, ethnic, religious, academic, socioeconomic, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity communities.

    Salary : The rank is open, and the salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, with a starting salary of $65,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes health and wellness plans, retirement savings plans, one-month (20 working days) vacation per year, and tuition assistance.
