The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time Research Assistant Professor on a 12-month basis with an anticipated start date of 1 September 2025. The position is outside of the tenure stream and subject to annual review.
Responsibilities: The Research Assistant Professor will join an NIH-funded laboratory focused on the evolution of immunity and pathogenesis in environmental pathogens and their amoeba predators. Research will include studies focusing on the innate, cell-intrinsic defenses of amoebae and other eukaryotes. The candidate will be expected to perform experiments, analyze data, and participate in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and grant submissions. Acquisition of independent funding is an objective.
Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a Ph.D. in one of the biological sciences and have 2 or more years of postdoctoral experience. At minimum, candidates should have experience in 1) phylogenomics across diverse eukaryotic species, 2) cultivation and genetic manipulation of Legionella pneumophila, Dictyostelium discoideum, and mammalian cell lines, and 3) development and optimization of infection assays using these species. Preferred qualifications include 1) extensive molecular biology experience and 2) experience mentoring undergraduates and graduate students in the lab. Successful candidates will have a strong publication record, a history of obtaining independent funding, be self-motivated, have good communication skills, and work productively in an interdisciplinary team.
