The Esports Coach is responsible for coaching the collegiate esports team at the University of Redlands, providing strategic leadership and fostering an environment that promotes student-athlete success. This position requires expertise across multiple game genres and platforms, ensuring a competitive and engaging experience for team members. The Esports Coach will be responsible for developing student-athletes both in gameplay and personal growth, while also managing practice schedules, recruiting, and community outreach.
This role requires flexibility to work evenings and weekends, as well as the ability to travel for competitions and events.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide immediate and constructive feedback to players on gameplay strategies.
- Conduct one-on-one coaching sessions to develop individual player skills.
- Foster a supportive and motivating team environment.
- Ensure student-athlete well-being, including academic support and mental health awareness.
- Plan and organize all practices and competitive matches.
- Find and schedule scrimmages and exhibition matches with other collegiate teams.
- Stay up to date on game metas, patch updates, and competitive strategies.
- Register teams for competitive seasons and ensure compliance with governing esports organizations (NCAA, NACE, NAIA, etc.).
- Maintain and oversee the University’s Esports Arena and equipment.
- Organize and run streaming events, ensuring all collegiate matches are broadcast.
- Record and archive matches for analysis and strategic development.
- Assist in recruiting qualified student-athletes to the program.
- Engage with the community to promote esports events and initiatives.
- Participate in University outreach programs and activities.
- Develop and implement individual player skill development plans.
- Manage team schedules, travel logistics, and budgetary considerations.
- Ensure the health and safety of athletes and staff.
- Resolve player conflicts and encourage a positive team culture.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Guidelines
Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:
Experience/Training/Education:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Sports Coaching Education, Business, or a related field, or equivalent experience in esports (coaching, team management, media broadcasting, or competitive play).
- Experience in coaching and providing constructive feedback.
- Demonstrated knowledge of competitive gaming across multiple platforms.
- Strong organizational and communication skills with attention to detail.
- Passion for developing student-athletes both in gameplay and personal growth.
Preferred:
- Experience with collegiate-level esports programs.
- Familiarity with rules and regulations of NCAA, NACE, NAIA, and other esports governing bodies.
- Expertise in Rocket League, League of Legends, Call of Duty, Valorant, and other competitive esports titles.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the community.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and motivate student-athletes.
- Proficiency in streaming platforms and esports content creation.
- Understanding of game mechanics, team strategies, and competitive play.
- Ability to analyze and adapt to changing esports trends and updates.

Working Conditions:
Standard office setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required.

HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range considers the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.
