Definition Of Classification
The Laboratory Coordinator provides day-to-day preparation and support for all biology and chemistry laboratory courses. Reporting to the Science Center Director, this role ensures the smooth operation of laboratory activities by preparing materials, maintaining equipment, and supporting faculty and students in an organized and safe laboratory environment.

Working Conditions:
Standard office setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.
Physical Demands
Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; may travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range considers the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.
BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Duties And Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Prepares chemical solutions, media, and culture plates as requested by faculty.
- Maintains and cryopreserves stocks of microorganisms and prepares cell cultures for teaching and research.
- Supports the maintenance of invertebrate colonies, including Drosophila and Daphnia.
- Prepares gels for electrophoresis, including SDS-PAGE, as requested.
- Performs molecular biology procedures to assist with faculty-led teaching and research projects.
- Sets up and breaks down equipment for biology and chemistry laboratory sessions, ensuring proper cleanup and organization.
- Collects, treats, and disposes of laboratory waste, including biohazardous materials, in compliance with safety regulations.
- Conducts routine data entry for chemical and equipment inventory management and other relevant software programs.
- Organizes and maintains laboratory preparation protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Assists in the cleaning and organization of stockrooms and laboratories.
- Provides guidance and instruction to student workers in laboratory-related tasks.
- Ensures adherence to all safety and housekeeping policies and procedures.
- Contributes to team efforts by completing related tasks and special projects as assigned.
Experience/Training/Education
Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Two to three years of college-level coursework in science, including at least one year each of biology and chemistry, and one semester of organic chemistry or advanced biology.
- Six months to one year of relevant experience in a laboratory setting is required.
- A Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field is preferred.
- Proficiency in basic biological and chemical procedures, including aseptic and sterile techniques.
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment commonly used in biology and chemistry settings.
- Knowledge of toxic, corrosive, and flammable materials, hazardous waste management, and standard safety regulations and practices.
- Comfortable working with live and preserved specimens.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and resourcefulness in troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
- Proficiency in computer software applications for inventory management and laboratory documentation.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
- Physical agility to safely and effectively perform laboratory duties.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle for occasional laboratory supply shopping.
- Ability to successfully pass a physical examination upon offer of employment.
