The chair position is a 3-year renewable appointment (academic year appointment plus summer funding), beginning as soon as July 1, 2025. The Chair will report to the Dean of the College. Teaching release and financial arrangements are to be discussed with the Dean.

The Department of Psychology at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a tenure-track Full Professor who will serve as Department Chair. We are looking for a collaborative, visionary leader who promotes excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service; demonstrates a strong commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access; and complements the missions of the Department, College, and University. The successful applicant will have demonstrated leadership and administrative abilities as well as an eminent record of scholarship and a history of obtaining external funding and gaining notable visibility within their field(s) of study. Candidates with a history of fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships across departments or institutions are especially encouraged to apply.

The Department of Psychology houses among the largest undergraduate and graduate programs at the University, with over 1000 undergraduates and 60 graduate students. We offer both BA and BS Undergraduate degrees, doctoral tracks in Behavioral Science and an APA-accredited Clinical Psychology program, and a new masters-level program in Mental and Behavioral Health Counseling. Clinical training is supported by our Psychological Consultation Center (PCC) that serves both the university and the larger Rhode Island community. The successful candidate will be prepared to work with the undergraduate program director, graduate program directors, the PCC director, administrative staff, and tenure-track, research, and teaching faculty to ensure effective program development and resource allocation; advocate for faculty and students; maintain accreditation standards; promote collaboration and innovation in research, teaching, mentoring, and graduate training; and foster a strong sense of community. Primary Duties And Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of department chairpersons are as follows: A department chairperson shall have administrative responsibility for the program of the Department under the Dean of the College; provide leadership to department members in planning and developing policies and programs; evaluate the instructional, research and administrative processes of the department and make recommendations to the Dean; evaluate periodically the department members and report the evaluations as required; recommend appointments, reappointments, award of tenure, promotions and dismissals of department members; facilitate the relationship between the administration and faculty; ensure that adequate supervision, advice and training are provided to new department members and others who might benefit therefrom; generally promote the welfare of the department and the University by appropriate means; and carry out other such duties as are set forth in the University Manual.

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in psychology or a closely related field.
  • At the rank of full professor or an associate eligible for promotion to full professor.
  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative abilities within an academic setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to building toward a just, equitable, inclusive, diverse, and accessible scholarly environment by bringing together groups of students, faculty, staff, and community members with diverse lived experiences and backgrounds.
  • A record of excellence in high-quality, productive, and impactful research.
  • Demonstrated experience acquiring external research funding.
  • A record of excellence in mentoring junior and mid-career faculty members.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and student mentoring and advising.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of enthusiasm, empathy, humility, collegiality, and a selfless “community-first” attitude.
  • Commitment to fostering a culture of teamwork, encouraging diverse perspectives, and empowering community members to contribute unique strengths toward a common goal.

  • A record of progressive leadership and administrative, personnel, and financial management experience, including the ability to recognize and develop talent.
