What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wood Metal Tech Lab Technician position at University of Richmond?
SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and facilitating the safe use of the metal shop, wood shop, and tech lab in and out of class. It also maintains and facilitates the use of the critique room space and demonstrations in classes and manages and trains the team of student workers who also work within these spaces. During the summer months the position will be responsible for updating knowledge and training of the various equipment and the upkeep and maintenance of its spaces.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
During the Academic Year:
- Supervise scheduled open shop time and facilitate the use of the metal shop, wood shop, and tech lab both in and out of classes.
- Offer on-going, scheduled, introductory training and assistance to faculty and the student body in the use of the metal, wood, and tech labs.
- Assist in the maintenance of equipment in wood shop, metal shop, tech lab, and critique space while also assuring the safety, functionality, and organization of these areas in coordination with the studio manager.
- Coordinate with faculty and studio manager to identify tools, materials, and supplies for the metal, wood, tech, and critique areas so that classes may use these spaces at will.
- Coordinate and supervise student workers in the metal, wood, tech, and critique lab areas. Supervise and create the equipment checkout process for the metal, wood, tech, and critique labs.
- Coordinate and help with student and faculty work installation and projects in the departmental spaces, on campus and for select projects off-campus (examples include Annual Open House and Open Studio Event, Exhibitions and projects in the International Center).
During the Summer months:
- In the spring semester, work with the building manager, the faculty sculpture area head, and the Chair to make a plan for summer projects; including equipment and software education (initial and continuous learning necessary for machinery) and maintenance, assistance to students and faculty in the wood and metal shop spaces, preparation of student workshops for the academic year, and recruit and train student workers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Metal fabrication, wood working, digital tools and software(CNC router, CNC plasma, 3D printing, laser cutter, and Rhinoceros), ability to multi task, good problem solving.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
BFA in Sculpture or equivalent experience (3 years minimum) of experience as a technician in the studio art environment. Examples include working and maintaining a wood or metal shop.
WORK HOURS:
- Full-time, non-exempt position
- Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week
SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 5 (Hiring Range: $18.24 to $24.17 per hour)
