Research Assistant for AI/ML (Assistant Scientist)
Location: Rochester, NY
Type: Full-Time
Organization: University of Rochester, Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE)
About Us
Join the forefront of innovation at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), a global leader in high-energy-density (HED) science and advanced laser systems. LLE plays a pivotal role in the quest for fusion energy, leveraging its renowned Omega laser systems to drive groundbreaking research in inertial confinement fusion. The facility is home to the OMEGA and OMEGA EP lasers, which are among the most advanced systems of their kind, utilizing techniques like chirped pulse amplification (CPA) — a technology recognized with the Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland. By joining LLE, you’ll be part of a team contributing to world-class scientific discoveries and technological innovations.
The Role
We are proud to announce the creation of a dedicated AI/ML Group within our Theoretical Division. As a Research Assistant (Assistant Scientist), you will have the opportunity to explore machine learning applications across various domains, including advancing HED sciences, optimizing laser facility operations, and developing systems capable of achieving ~100 shots per day. This position offers the chance to engage in exploratory research and shape the future of AI-driven solutions in experimental science.
Possible Projects
- Develop and implement ML techniques for high-speed video extrapolation.
- Design tools for diagnostic image denoising and synthesis, including tomographic reconstruction.
- Utilize Bayesian and reinforcement learning methods to address control and optimization problems, such as automated target and instrument alignment.
- Explore ML applications in computational chemistry and HED science.
- Improve secure database access for principal investigators by leveraging large language models (LLMs).
The specific projects will depend on the candidate’s expertise and interests, and we encourage innovative proposals that align with LLE’s goals.
