Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE:The Associate Dean of Students provides visionary and strategic leadership for the well-being of University of Rochester students. Ensures the work of the Office of the Dean of Students is in alignment with the University’s strategic plan. Oversees the daily functions of 3 essential offices: the Health Promotion Office, the CARE Network, and Student Conduct. These offices serve all University students in the realm of student well-being, identifying and supporting students who may be struggling, and resolving student conflict. Chairs the Student Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) which assesses students at risk for harm to self or others and facilitates collaboration with other team members to ensure a safe campus community. Additionally, the Associate Dean of Students serves as the University Judicial Officer, responsible through the Dean of Students to the President of the University for all matters related to student conduct and behavior. Acts as the next in line to the Dean of Students in all issues regarding department supervision and support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervision and Leadership
- Directly supervise the Director of the Health Promotion Office, Director of the CARE Network, Director of Student Conduct, and an Administrative Assistant.
- Includes ongoing supervision, evaluation and guidance of those 3 University wide programs and teams.
- Hires, trains and mentors new and advanced professionals in their work related to student well-being, support, and conflict management.
- Holds regular staff meetings.
- Educate other departments and offices about the work of the Office of the Dean of Students and the support it can provide.
- Provides leadership for the CARE Network, Health Promotion Office, and Student Conduct.
- Ensures the Director, Student Conduct is creating a restorative justice conduct system with a focus on student learning as the goal of accountability. Promotes training, updating and educating others about policies and procedures related to investigating and responding to allegations of inappropriate student conduct.
- Ensures the Director of the Health Promotion Office is successful at advancing a comprehensive, inclusive, and progressive student wellness model, focusing not only on the individual student, but also on the systems and settings in which they live and learn on campus.
- Ensures the Director of the CARE Network leads a University-wide strategic approach to improve and preserve student and community well-being.
University Judicial Officer:
- Oversees policy creation and implementation in the areas of Student Conduct
- Represents the appellate level of all cases in Student Conduct and works closely with the Office of Counsel, Title IX, Public Safety, Residential Life and other offices to help maintain the safety and security of the student experience.
- In coordination with the Director, Student Conduct, the AD records and reports instances of Clery violations to the Dean of Students.
- Represents the Office of the Dean of Students in University Management level conversations around student behavior and conduct cases with high campus impact.
- Provides reports, updates and support related to students in all matters regarding laws, policies and violations related to the student body.
- Educates and collaborates with Faculty and Staff regarding University polices relating to student behavior.
- Works closely with Academic Honesty to make a cohesive, University wide approach to student accountability.
ODOS leadership team
- In the absence of the Dean of Students the AD directs the Office of the Dean of Students.
- Participates in University management level meetings and represents interest of student well-being. Acts as a liaison to outside partners such as other Universities, Government agencies and businesses connected to the University mission.
- In collaboration with the Dean of Students, provides objectives and develops programs for supporting a positive staff culture
- Acts as the primary contact for staff looking for support with conflict and student issues.
- Creates a vision around topics related to student well-being, student conduct, student loss, parent needs and connection.
- Represents the Dean of Students on campus wide committees and at meetings related to student issues and support.
- Provides leadership in strategic meetings related to the operation of the Office of the Dean of Students.
- Serves as a backup for 24/7 crisis support.
Chair, Behavioral Assessment Team (BAT)
- Select, train and advise a university wide student Behavioral Assessment Team.
- In consultation with BAT, carry out involuntary leaves of absence when appropriate.
- Manage the BAT’s caseload of students in potentially dangerous situations and/or in need of quick intervention.
- Works with partners on the team to establish the best form of intervention to keep the student and the campus safe.
- The BAT does not serve as a disciplinary body but will make referrals to the appropriate University or law enforcement authorities regarding violent or threatening behavior.
Regularly Participate in:
- University Student Life meetings, University Management Team Meetings, ODOS/ODOS Strategic planning,
- ODOS and University wide committees related to job responsibilities.
- Regional, state, national professional organizations pertinent to the field
- Evening Campus on call rotation for emergency response.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, or related field preferred.
- 8-10 years of Student Affairs experience related to the topics directly below, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Experience in the student conduct field, supporting students with mental health presentations, behavioral assessment/intervention, and leadership of a student affairs department required.
- Ability to read and interpret case law in accordance with Federal and NYS statutes impacting higher education.
- Knowledge of higher education systems; effective communicator both written and verbal, of sensitive and confidential information; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with meticulous attention to detail; ability to work independently while exercising good judgment; proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships in a complex environment.
- Knowledge of current practices in student affairs and higher education to include proper methods and resources for compliance such matters as substance abuse, student disciplinary actions, Clery and Family Rights and Privacy Act. Strong understanding of legal and compliance issues in higher education related to student life.
- Experience supporting and mentoring student life staff and ensuring they understand how their work contributes to the larger purpose of the university; bolster internal communications and delegate effectively to ensure maximum efficiency across the division
- Knowledge of restorative justice and trauma informed practices preferred.
