Responsibilities
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under the direction of a qualified physician, performs a variety of technical procedures in the application of non-ionizing high frequency ultrasound waves to humans for diagnostic purposes. Performs all technical procedures required for the ultrasonic assessment of OB/GYN patients.
Essential Functions
- Performs routine and specialized ultrasound studies related to Obstetrics and Gynecology. Prepares patients for examinations and explains procedures prior to performing studies. Obtains complete patient history and documents in patient’s computer file. Recognizes significance of all structures that are visualized at all times. Differentiates artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognizes equipment limitations. Recognizes a diagnostic versus incomplete scan and interprets any pathology that may be present. Discusses findings with PNC physician. Properly make permanent recordings of studies for patient’s files using digital imaging, video tapes and thermal printers. Responsible for promptly notifying the attending physician and accurately reporting findings in cases of pathology, abnormality or clinical significance. Takes night and weekend call for one-week intervals as scheduled, including assigned holidays.
- Assists in the sterile technique procedures such as amniocentesis, cyst aspirations, PUBS, and Chorionic Villi sampling. Responsible for proper labeling, handling and delivery of samples taken during these procedures.
- Contributes to keeping the laboratory orderly and clean to ensure a safe work environment.
- Assists in the instruction of the student interns, outside preceptors, residents and fellows rotating through the department. May be asked to provide in-services related to ultrasound to medical students.
- Performs duties associated with individually assigned tasks in accordance with the policies documented for each task.
- Responsible for obtaining pertinent diagnostic laboratory test results for referring and PNC physicians, which may be necessary for correlation with the ultrasound study.
- Monitors and reports quality, operating condition and failures to laboratory supervisor after thoroughly assessing and attempting to remedy situation.
- Obtains follow-up on cases and updates teaching files with scans and/or video tapes.
- Assists in ancillary lab duties such as scheduling patients, answering phones, printing reports and mail distribution when necessary.
- Reads journals to keep abreast of new developments in diagnostic ultrasound. Attends conventions and symposiums and shares new information to staff. Obtains necessary continuing education credits to keep ARDMS registration current and valid. May participate in the research and drafting of original articles.
Minimum Education & Experience
- Associate's degree in laboratory sciences and technical training closely related to this position required
- Bachelor's degree in laboratory sciences and technical training closely related to this position preferred
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Initiative and independent judgement required
- High standards of medical ethics with obvious empathy and respect towards patients required
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians and general public required
- Sound knowledge of the terminology and common practices of modern ultrasound required
- Exercises a high degree of technical competence, accuracy and judgement required
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of equipment used with the laboratory required
- (OBGYN) ARDMS or ARRT - Obstetrics and Gynecology ARDMS registered or registry eligible in OB/GYN upon hire required
