Compensation Range

$39.09 - $50.82

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities

General Purpose:

Assists with management of the technical, administrative, financial, quality, and personnel functions of the laboratory section, under the close direction of the section and department leadership. Remains proficient in testing procedures for all laboratory areas, and trains new personnel as well as evaluates competency for all technologists in the laboratory.  Provides clinical testing results and related information to the transplant programs. Assists in providing supervision and administrative support to the laboratory section. 

Essential Functions

  • Performs the duties of a medical technologist specialist as needed.  Remains proficient in all lab testing procedures. Takes bench call as assigned per technologists’ call rotation schedule. 
  • Assists with preliminary or final sign-off of test results, depending on complexity. Participates in process development and monitors the efficient operation of the laboratory to ensure prompt reporting of results within defined laboratory reporting parameters. Ensures continual compliance with all regulatory requirements and agencies. Ensures ongoing compliance and adequate documentation.  Provides daily operational direction and technical guidance to staff through work assignments, in the absence of leadership. Leads the development of instructional and training protocols. 
  • Confers with lab area and department leadership concerning laboratory testing and operations. Keeps abreast of current advances in the field and acts to evaluate and implement changes as appropriate. Ensures adequacy of laboratory supplies through an effective inventory management system. Ensures adequacy of instrument performance, including preventative maintenance. Ensures compliance with safety, infection control, and housekeeping policies. 
  • Provides on-call supervisory and technical support availability, on a 24-hour, 7-day-per-week basis, in a rotation with leadership, as well as on-call laboratory work, in partnership with the team of technologists, as needed. Assists with policy and procedure development for the laboratory area. Develops goals and objectives for sections that are in alignment with departmental goals, in collaboration with faculty and area leadership. Assists in ensuring compliance with, and effectiveness of, departmental and section procedures. Recommends revision as needed. Participates in laboratory and section management meetings and regular staff meetings; follows up on issues and responds to inquiries in a timely fashion. 
  • Participates in the development and administration of an effective quality assurance program, measuring the critical aspects of service. Monitors and evaluates results of program and the adequacy of indicators, and implements improvement actions.  Participates in the design, oversight, and monitoring of the laboratory quality control program to ensure accurate reporting of results.  Works with American Society Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) and NYS inspectors for planned and unannounced inspections as well as Lab Medicine tracer audits. In the absence of the Manager, responsible for ASHI Proficiency Testing Program testing and results reporting. Seeks information to improve work processes; researches and implements solutions to problems in a timely manner. 
  • Oversees technical and professional performance of all section employees, in the absence of leadership. Oversees performance evaluation and competency assessment processes. Ensures fair and accurate evaluation following laboratory standards of performance. Provides counseling and constructive feedback for employee development.  Supervises assigned section staff, including performance evaluations and actions.  Assists area leadership with hiring, transfer, promotion, disciplinary action, and termination. Interviews candidates.  Manages laboratory staffing including adequacy and equity of scheduling and training, in the absence of the Manager.  Participates in the development and maintenance of accurate and appropriate job descriptions. 
  • Reviews and releases all lab billing from the laboratory information system (HistoTrac), in the absence of the manager.  Generates billing for transplant donor testing. Reviews assigned section's business reports for accuracy and initiates corrections, as needed. Completes responses by stated deadlines. Collaborates with leadership to evaluates the impact of testing volume changes and recommends budget adjustments as appropriate.  Participates in the development of the annual section operational and capital budgets. Understands the financial impact of operational decisions.  Assists with managing section manpower by ensuring the productive use of staff, and setting limits for overtime, and monitoring overtime usage. Assists with section purchasing activities, identification, and implementation of opportunities for reducing expenses, and improving the efficiency of the process. Assists with management of operational budget by appropriate use of sub codes, budget distribution across sub codes, and management of expenses to meet section budget.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Serology, or equivalent sub-specialty certification and four years’ experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist with three years in human immunogenetics, human histocompatibility and/or human transplantation immunology testing under the supervision of a director and/or technical supervisor of a laboratory accredited by the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) or an equivalent ASHI accreditation review board-approved laboratory required.
  • Masters degree in any of the above disciplines in clinical laboratory science or related field preferred.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience  .

Licenses And Certifications

  • NYS Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist required.
  • Credentialing by the American Board / American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics as a Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) required.
  • Or Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) certification preferred.
