Job Description:
The University of Saint Joseph invites qualified applicants to serve as temporary adjunct faculty within the English major, part of the Cultures, Arts, and Literatures Department. Successful candidates should have teaching experience within the field of basic English composition. The English major in the School of Arts, Sciences, Business, and Education seeks qualified candidates with a minimum of a MA in English.
We currently have openings to teach the following course:
- ENGL 104 The Art of Effective Writing I: Practice in exposition, argumentation and the methods of research based on the study and discussion of creative, critical and factual works. The two course sections will meet in person on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 11 AM to 1:45 PM starting in August, 2023. Compensation is $3600 to $2900 per class depending on experience and degree.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Develop and/or update a course syllabus
- Prepare lectures, projects, homework, assessments, and other student assignments
- Grade all student assignments in a timely manner. Provide appropriate feedback to students to promote academic success
- Maintain regularly scheduled office hours; Adjuncts must be available a minimum of one additional hour per week, either in-person or virtually, to provide support to students
- Attend program/department meetings as requested
- Demonstrate knowledge of the current methods and practices for teaching college-level courses; present qualified and clear instruction related to the course subject
- Learn and utilize technology offered at USJ to facilitate teaching
- Meet all designated class periods in the semester as dictated by the academic calendar
- Submit mid-semester and final grades to the Registrar's Office within required timeframes, leave all course records with the department chairperson upon completion of the course
- Build a positive rapport with students and faculty and promote an environment of student success at USJ
Requirements:
- Master's degree or higher in English, Writing, Composition, Literature, or related field. Degrees must be from an accredited institution.
- Industry experience, a terminal degree, and/or prior college level teaching experience is strongly preferred
- Cultural competency to work with diverse student and/or employee population.

Additional Information:
Teaching assignments are part-time, on a semester basis only and are dependent on student enrollment and department need. All adjunct offers are contingent on sufficient enrollment. Regular attendance is an essential job function as it demonstrates dependability towards the performance of job duties.
Adjunct rates per 3-credit course:
- Non-Terminal Degree/0-6 Credits Experience = $2,900.00
- Terminal Degree/0-6 Credits Experience = $3,100.00
- Non-Terminal Degree/7 Credits Experience = $3,300.00
- Terminal Degree/7 Credits Experience = $3,600.0
