What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nursing Simulation Educator position at University of Saint Joseph?
The Nursing Simulation Educator supports the Director of the Nursing Learning Center and the clinical skills laboratory. The educator works to facilitate simulation activities for the Department of Nursing. The Educator serves as an evaluator and teacher/coach for students referred to the lab for academic and clinical skills support. This is a full-time, 12-month staff position.
- Responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the nursing lab for all student experiences.
- Responsible for set up and break down of lab activities during the day and evening.
- Maintains an inventory of durable and disposable medical/nursing supplies.
- Maintains American Heart Association BLS instructor certification and offers faculty recertification programs every two years and as needed.
- Orients new faculty and supports current faculty to the use of simulation to meet student learning outcomes and the projection/recording equipment used in the lab.
- Works with faculty to develop high quality intensive simulations.
- Collaborates with faculty on the simulation task force committee to review the pre-work and post-work to enhance the learning from the simulation experience.
- Collects, and tracks statistical data with respect to simulation sessions and open lab hours, such as: student and faculty responses/concerns, anticipated content needs, student outcomes as a result of participation in scenarios.
- Applies pedagogically sound principles of evaluation (authentic, norm-referenced, criterion referenced) with respect to students’ progress and on-going learning needs.
- Meets with students as requested through faculty referral for one-on-one or group tutoring or skill support and supervision. Generates reports related to student progress to the referring faculty member, with a copy to the Department Chair (on an as needed or requested basis), and a copy to the student file.
- Maintains a commitment to privacy and confidentiality related to students’ issues.
- Co-develops simulation scenarios with faculty with a focus on multiple, specific content areas.
- Facilitates simulation scenarios with either a lab assistant or faculty member.
- Facilitates the simulation observation area and participates in post simulation debriefing sessions between students and facilitator.
- Attends one national simulation conference per year.
- Remediates Dimensional Analysis and reports to faculty on student progression
- Creates a classroom, laboratory or clinical setting that develops critical thinking in students
- Works cooperatively and collaboratively with faculty colleagues
- Maintains the appropriate credentials or license required for the position
- Serves as a member of the Simulation Committee; other committee responsibilities may be assigned by the Lab Director or Department Chair.

Education & Experience
- Master’s Degree in nursing required.
- Current RN licensure in the State of Connecticut (must be valid and in good standing) required
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification (or ability to become certified by date of hire)
- A minimum of three years of full-time nursing practice in a medical surgical or critical care environment is required. Prior experience in simulation is preferred.
- Prior experience in teaching at the clinical or college level is ideal but not required.
- Knowledge of and experience with simulation pedagogy preferred.
- Experience with simulation use in nursing education preferred.

- Up-to-date with all immunizations required by the State and organization.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, may include evening hours.
- Excellent problem solving and organizational skills; the ability to make pedagogically sound decisions with respect to students’ learning needs and progress, instructional approaches to students who participate in lab experiences.
- Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment.
- Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment. Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Internet, and other programs as needed (e.g., mail merge, data base management). Familiarity with specific applications used by the University/Department a plus.
- Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents.
- Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner.
- Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, diplomacy, negotiation and sales skills, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision.
