Job Purpose

The Area Coordinator for the Office of Residence Life & Housing is responsible for fostering a vibrant, student-centered residential community by providing leadership, mentorship, and support to students living within the Scranton community. This position plays a key role in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. Reporting to an Assistant Director of Residence Life & Housing, the Area Coordinator oversees the day-to-day management of residential communities, including student support, staff supervision, and crisis response. In collaboration with campus partners, this role assists with housing assignments, facilities coordination, and administrative processes to enhance the student experience. The Area Coordinator supports the University's Jesuit mission by cultivating a sense of belonging, promoting student success, and fostering an environment that encourages personal growth and a strong sense of community

This position requires the staff member to live on campus in an apartment provided by the University.

Essential Duties

  • Provide leadership and oversight for assigned residential areas, ensuring a supportive and inclusive learning environment
  • Supervise and mentor a Resident Assistant staff, including one Head Resident Assistant, providing ongoing support, training, and feedback regarding their roles as student leaders
  • Create, implement and support activities/events that permit students to achieve identified learning outcomes for assigned community. Facilitate interventions with students to support their academic, social, and personal development, including facilitating conflict resolution and mediations as needed
  • Participate in an on-call duty rotation to address campus-based emergencies, providing immediate support for student to ensure safety in the community
  • Serve as a hearing officer for the Office of Student Conduct & Conflict resolution to facilitate educational conferences with students who are charged with a violation(s) of the University’s Student Code of Conduct
  • Oversee a programming budget ensuring appropriate fiscal management, approving expenditures, and reconciling monthly statements
  • Participate in department wide initiatives including but not limited to opening and closing of residence halls, annual assessment of student learning, room assignments, selection of student staff, off campus educational process, off campus student support, and student staff training
  • Cultivate meaningful relationships with students, staff, and campus partners to build trust, promote collaboration, and enhance the overall residential experience
  • Educate students about University and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Communicate with students, parents, and other campus departments in a timely and effective manner in person, by phone, and via e-mail

Additional Skills Required

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal skills are required
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations in a caring and professional manner
  • Ability to work with various constituencies such as students, faculty, staff, and parents/family support is essential
  • Ability to motivate students both individually and collectively
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while effectively prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines
  • Evening and weekend work is essential for the realization of the goals and objectives of the department
  • Must be able to respect, support, and contribute to the University’s Catholic and Jesuit Mission

Minimum Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required

Preferred Education

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs Administration or a related field preferred

Minimum Job Experience Requirements

  • Two (2) years of professional or full-time graduate experience in residence life is required including working with residence hall management, student supervision and leadership, student affairs, or customer service. Graduate assistantships in residence life, student conduct, and/or conference services may be considered as work experience.
