Responsibilities

Performs a variety of related digital image management tasks as necessary. ie exceptions, annotations; maintains competency by demonstrating a complete working knowledge of all imaging equipment and supplies, including but not limited to mammography unit- digital 2D or 3D (tomosynthesis), breast ultrasound, invasive procedure supplies and/or trays; performs patient assessment and screening, such as prior breast surgery, risk factors, hormone therapy, breast density, prior mammograms, within the scope of practice; documents pertinent clinical and family history; reviews patient’s prior imaging and history, consulting the Radiologist or ordering practitioner when needed; reviews CPOE and written orders, verifying information is accurate, appropriate, and complete, consulting with healthcare providers as needed; performs visual breast exam based on patient communication, documenting location of lumps, scars, moles, breast changes, etc.; selects equipment appropriate to the patient and exam to be performed; demonstrates proper positioning for screening, diagnostic, and/or invasive procedures; appropriately identifies images according to ACR guidelines; uses appropriate exposure factors, target/filter combination, and AEC mode based upon breast tissue density, compressed thickness, and patient characteristics; provides radiation protection according to prescribed safety standards; maintains aseptic or sterile technique, as appropriate, when performing biopsies, aspirations, or localizations; directly assists the performing clinician during invasive procedures; recognizes emergency situations and initiates code procedures as needed; accurately critiques images to determine diagnostic quality and adjusts factors if imaging is to be repeated; reviews images and consults with MQSA qualified physician when pathology seen may require additional imaging; consults with MQSA qualified interpreting physician to review image quality and positioning and establishes corrective procedures as required; adheres to established protocols, QA guidelines, and regulatory requirements (MQSA, ACR); performs or assists with the performance of accreditation requirements for the American College of Radiology (ACR); pleasantly greets patient, confirming identity using two identifiers and introducing oneself; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with patients, families, and all members of the healthcare team; completely explains examination procedure to the patient and family, if present; performs visual preventive safety inspections of all equipment used and communicates problems to supervisor/assistant director/director; maintains necessary inventory of supplies, rotating stock in an orderly fashion, and eliminating outdated items; maintains orderliness and cleanliness of the department; completes all aspects of a patient’s exam, including ensuring images are available for physician review on PACS in a timely manner, charging procedures and supplies; protects patients and employees by adhering to infection control policies and procedures; maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and/or participating in professional societies; completes all mandatory educational requirements in a timely manner; may assist with training of Mammography students; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, successful completion of an approved course in Radiologic Technology, one year of experience conducting routine diagnostic procedures, and completion of an approved program in advanced modality or one year of experience in advance modality. A bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Technology may substitute for the required experience in conducting routine diagnostic procedures. Registry with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Diagnostic Radiology is required. Advanced registry is highly preferred, and may be required for certain modalities.
