Responsibilities
Abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization’s values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; demonstrates CPR according to American Heart Association standards; serves as preceptor for new employees and respiratory students; assists in emergency treatment of acute cardio-respiratory arrest; administers continuous and intermittent cardio-pulmonary therapeutic procedures; administers respiratory medications to the respiratory tract; demonstrates purpose, rationale, precautions and observations when performing skilled procedures; assesses patients’ progress according to care plan and suggests modes of therapy to physicians and nurses; determines and provides necessary patient/family education, including basic and more advanced respiratory procedures; utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety and when moving equipment that is necessary to perform essential functions; receives and transcribes cardio-pulmonary orders according to medical staff by-laws; provides technical and clinical leadership to all cardio-pulmonary staff as needed; utilizes a personal computer or terminal to access the Clinical Information Systems; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone or other message systems; responds to overhead pages; responds to electronic message system while on duty; utilizes the correct documentation tools and procedures; ensures Respiratory Therapy flowsheets are completed per policy and procedures manual; maintains record of staff workload assignments, and occurrences of problems and events; attends or completes all mandatory department meetings, educational requirements and hospital offerings; utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; assists with ordering and stocking adequate equipment and supply inventories; performs cleaning and sterilization of cardio-respiratory equipment and supplies; provides competent patient care to the following patient populations: Neonate, Infant-Toddler/Preschool, School Age/Adolescent, Reproductive Age, Post/Peri Menopausal; ensures equitable scheduling of employees, distributing staff members during their shift to provide high quality patient care; assesses work performance of staff members; participates as a member of the Respiratory Care instruction staff, teaching technical and clinical special procedures and in-services as required; ensures hospital and departmental procedures are adhered to by all Respiratory Therapy shift employees; counsels or refer employees when indicated; assists in development and implementation of departmental policies with the Director; performs all Respiratory Technologist duties and automatically assumes these tasks when necessary; assists with performance evaluations; assists director with interviewing prospective employers; accesses and accurately maintains electronic and paper medical records; regular and prompt attendance and the ability to work schedule as assigned and overtime as required; related duties as required.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent, completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program, current licensure with the Alabama Board of Respiratory Therapists and registered with the National Board of Respiratory Care, at least two years' experience, one advanced Life Support or specialty credential from NBRC appropriate to patient group.
