Join the University Libraries Digital Collections Department at the University of South Carolina and be a part of an innovative, cutting edge, and collaborative environment to preserve unique cultural heritage collections from South Carolina and beyond. The Digital Collections Department digitizes special collections held by the University Libraries, publishes them online for student, faculty, and community access, and ensures the preservation of digital collections for long-term survival and use. Reporting to the Digital Collections Librarian, the Digital Imaging Lab Manager carries out the digitization of these resources, using cultural heritage imaging technologies and national image quality standards to create high-quality digital surrogates of primary source materials, such as manuscripts, newspapers, archives, and maps. The Digital Imaging Lab Manager will work closely with the Digital Collections Librarian to prepare rare, unique, and historical materials for digitization, create preservation-quality digital images using specialized scanning and camera technologies, and process and organize imaging output for concurrent large-scale digitization projects to meet project standards and timelines. This role will also involve maintaining the lab equipment, managing the quality of the lab’s output, and training and supervising student workers, interns, and temporary employees while they are using the digital imaging lab. This role is critical to the University Libraries’ mission of providing access to information resources for researchers in South Carolina and worldwide.
Job Related Minimum Required Education And Experience
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 2 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree or certification in photography or related field.
- Experience managing digital imaging labs and projects.
- Knowledge of digitization standards (FADGI, etc.), tools (planetary and flatbed scanners, DSLR cameras, etc.), and software (Capture One, SilverFast, etc.).
- Knowledge of postproduction software (Photoshop, etc.).
- Experience with Digital Transitions imaging equipment and software.
- Supervisory and project management experience.
- Knowledge of cultural heritage photography principles and best practices, including color management, profiling, and calibration, studio lighting, and post-processing.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills and the ability to interact effectively with faculty, students, and staff.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to effectively plan and organize work activities to prioritize task completion according to schedules and goals.
- Ability to communicate effectively.

Job Duty
Management
- Manages the daily operations of Digital Collections’ imaging lab with responsibility for the lab’s output.
- Assists the Digital Collections Librarian in planning and executing digitization projects using a variety of digital imaging technologies to capture preservation and access copies of University Libraries’ Special Collections materials.
- Coordinates the delivery, inventory, and return of materials from the University Libraries’ Special Collections.
- Tracks progress of digitization projects and records statistics on production.
- Ensures consistently high quality of digital imaging output.
- Develops documentation for lab workflows and equipment.
Digital Imaging
- Creates high-quality digital images of special collections materials using the most appropriate imaging technologies for of a variety of sizes, formats, and conditions.
- Implements the FADGI Technical Guidelines for Digitizing Cultural Heritage Materials by imaging special collections materials according to national standards for resolution, color, and other measures of image quality.
- Performs postproduction work on digital files to prepare them for public access.
Training and Supervision
- Trains student workers, interns, and temporary employees on proper use of the digital imaging lab equipment.
- Supervises the work of student workers, interns, and temporary employees while they use the digital imaging equipment.
- Enforces best practices in safely handling rare and fragile materials and operating imaging equipment.
Maintenance
- Completes regular maintenance on the scanners, cameras, and computers in the digital imaging lab to ensure equipment is in working order.
- Troubleshoots imaging hardware and software, coordinating with vendors and suppliers as needed.
