Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
The position will provide technical support to research laboratories, training, and supervision of users of Cell Biology & Anatomy’s departmentally supported cell and tissue culture facility. The position will also provide training for and maintenance of departmental shared equipment.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in a related field and 3 years related research experience, or bachelor’s degree in a related field and 5 years related research experience. Experience with isolation and culture of primary cardiac myocytes and fibroblasts.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledgeable in isolation and culture of primary mammalian cells; Skilled in maintenance of a cell culture facility including knowledge of relevant health and safety requirements; Ability to train lab personnel in appropriate cell culture techniques; Knowledgeable in methods to analyze protein and gene expression in isolated cells and animal models including western blots, quantitative polymerase chain reaction and gene arrays; Skilled with histological methods including fixation of tissues, staining of tissue sections and microscopic analysis of stained sections; Skilled with rodent models of cardiovascular disease including models of pressure overload, diabetes and alcohol abuse; Knowledge of rules and regulations associated with utilization of research animals including completion of relevant training modules for animal handling and surgery; Ability to maintain complex databases of lab chemicals, training records, cell inventories, lab procedures and others; Knowledge of the university purchasing system and ability to order supplies, animals and other items as needed; Ability to work effectively with other individuals to ensure effective operation of multi-user research facility.

Organize and maintain the departmental cell culture facility to meet the requirements of ongoing cell and tissue culture research of the facility users at the SOMC, USC, and external institutions including daily maintenance of all facility equipment; schedules routine preventative maintenance, calibration, and certification on equipment; orders and stocks the facility with supplies including compressed gas cylinders and liquid nitrogen; makes and stocks various cell culture mediums, buffers, and other reagents requested by facility users.

Oversee the financial operation of the cell culture facility including creating monthly invoices based on current pricing; works with the department business manager to submit these invoices; provides monthly balance of the cell culture facility to the department chair. Work with vendors to obtain the best pricing for bulk items

Work closely with investigators and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety to maintain the safety of individuals utilizing the cell culture facility including ensuring that all users complete and document training required by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety and OSHA; preforms and documents lab specific training with all new users of the cell culture facility; prepares and schedules annual lab inspections by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
