About the Opportunity

The Director of Faculty Administration will work closely with the Office of the Provost, all academic units and schools of the University, and the University Committee on Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure. The Director will manage the process of appointment, tenure and promotion, tenure progress review, and post-tenure review processes for USC. The incumbent reports to the Vice Provost for Academic and Faculty Affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Provides annual training and support to academic units; preparing, editing and proofing summary documents; manages the updating and revision of academic unit tenure and promotion criteria; advises deans, deans of faculty, and department chairs on relevant policies and procedures; provides guidance and recommendations to the Vice Provost on revisions to processes and implementation of policy.
  • Provides support for the appointment of named professors and endowed chairs from all academic units; manages the approval process for the appointment of emeriti designations; and manages the process of the awarding of the distinctions of Distinguished and University Professors.
  • Reviews and provides support for the creation and revision of school guidelines around the promotion and appointment criteria for faculty on the research, teaching, clinical, and practice (RTPC) tracks.
  • Handles communications to schools, deans, and faculty on behalf of the Provost and Vice Provost on matters of policy and procedure.
  • Manages day-to-day faculty affairs activities (e.g., human resources-related functions). Hires, trains and supervises support staff. Counsels and disciplines employees, making firing and status change decisions as necessary.
  • Oversees the preparation and issuance of faculty contracts and any other official correspondence pertaining to faculty appointments, promotions, and sabbaticals (e.g., dossiers, endowed titles).
  • Ensures maintenance of accurate files and records for all relevant documentation.
  • Develops contract, leave, policy and system guidelines. Recommends policy changes and provides advice on procedure amendments.
  • Serves as subject matter expert on faculty affairs policies, procedures, systems and technology (e.g., Workday). Develops and maintains currency with all relevant faculty-related data and communicates necessary information to others as appropriate. Designs and develops relevant training programs (e.g., contracts, salary review) and onboards new faculty affairs staff.
  • Promotes an environment that fosters inclusive relationships and creates unbiased opportunities for contributions through ideas, words, and actions that uphold principles of the USC Code of Ethics.

Qualifications :

  • Preferred Education : PhD (strongly preferred due to the academic nature of the work)
  • Preferred Experience : 9 years or combined education / experience as substitute for minimum experience
  • Preferred Field of Expertise : Familiarity with and passion for the academic culture of the university. Leadership experience supervising and providing guidance to employees in a faculty governance environment. Comprehensive understanding of and ability to clearly communicate all aspects of faculty affairs. Organized, resourceful, and detail oriented. Excellent decision-making skills. Expert writing and interpersonal abilities.
  • Minimum Education : Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum Experience : 7 years or combined education / experience as substitute for minimum experience
  • Minimum Field of Expertise : Leadership experience supervising and providing guidance to employees in a faculty governance environment. Comprehensive understanding of and ability to clearly communicate all aspects of faculty affairs. Organized, resourceful, and detail oriented. Excellent decision-making skills. Expert writing and interpersonal abilities.
  • The annual base salary range for this position is $116,126.86 - $140,000.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education / training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
