Position Summary

The Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education at the University of Southern Indiana invites applications for a full-time, 10-month position as Director of Clinical Internships. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The start date for this position may be as early as April 1, 2025, but no later than August 1, 2025. Prior to August 1, 2025, there is an option to begin the position with a 12-month appointment, which will revert to a 10-month appointment beginning August 1, 2025.

The successful candidate will implement and evaluate well-designed and sequenced practical experiences for all teacher candidates in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Practice, Director of Doctoral Programs in Education, Director of Master and Certificate Programs in Education, faculty, and P12 partner schools/corporations. The director is specifically responsible for the coordination and organization of clinical internships (i.e. student teaching, building-level administrator placement) of all candidates at the University of Southern Indiana for initial and advanced programs.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Initiate mutually beneficial partnerships with schools, school corporations, and other educational agencies to establish appropriate settings for clinical internships. Maintain positive relationships with partnership personnel and follow preferred protocol for communication with key contacts. Maintain an electronic file of each partner's preferred protocol for co-selecting placements for clinical internships.
  • In conjunction with the Office of Risk Management and the Director of Clinical Practice, create and update Clinical Education Agreements.
  • With the Director of Clinical Practice, revise and promulgate USI's Clinical Practice Handbook and Clinical Internship Handbook for initial and advanced programs.
  • With the Director of Clinical Practice, oversee the creation and maintenance of the Office of Clinical Experiences webpage.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Practice and USI faculty to design innovative and creative clinical internship options such as virtual internship experiences, clinical internships abroad, and two-semester clinical internship experiences. Plan, promote, and conduct information meetings for these special clinical internship experiences.
  • Conduct group meetings virtually or in-person with teacher candidates who are prospective clinical interns for the next academic year, explaining the application process, eligibility requirements, and the placement process.
  • Oversee and manage clinical internship application process for the next academic year, interviewing applicants to ensure qualifications are met. Approve applicants or follow-up with concerns.
  • Oversee the collection and recording of prospective clinical intern information forms distributed during information meetings.
  • Oversee the creation of an Excel file listing prospective clinical interns and their progress toward meeting qualifications.
  • Determine clinical interns' enrollment in the appropriate synthesis course and clinical internship course section. Oversee the notification to prospective clinical interns of their progress toward meeting internship qualifications and communicate course registration numbers.
  • Follow each P-12 partner's preferred collaboration protocol to determine appropriate placements for prospective clinical interns based on major, geographical preference, and diversity of clinical practice placements. Verify the qualifications of cooperating teachers.
  • Oversee the communication of placement information to clinical interns, cooperating teachers, and school administrators.
  • Oversee the process of issuing contracts, payments, and verification letters to cooperating teachers.
  • Determine the number of university supervisors needed for each school year. When needed, search for, interview, and train new university supervisors.
  • Assign clinical interns to a university supervisor.
  • Record clinical internship placement information in the appropriate university database.
  • Oversee the process of issuing contracts, payment, and mileage reimbursement to university supervisors.
  • Respond to questions and concerns from clinical interns, cooperating teachers, and university supervisors.
  • Assist clinical interns and cooperating teachers with any disability accommodation requests.
  • Plan and conduct meeting for university supervisors at the beginning of each semester and as needed.
  • Plan and conduct Clinical Internship Orientation including Co-Teaching Training for clinical interns. Plan and conduct Clinical Internship Orientation including Co-Teaching Training for clinical interns participating in optional internships (e.g. experiences abroad) if necessary.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Clinical Practice, facilitate the Co-Teaching Training for cooperating teachers. Monitor that cooperating teachers complete the required training.
  • Monitor completion of Pairs Training by cooperating teachers and interns.
  • Create electronic binders and send to cooperating teachers; provide instruction on how to access, complete, and submit assessments; monitor and assure that clinical interns, cooperating teachers, and university supervisors submit appropriate forms and assessments.
  • Meet with clinical interns, cooperating teachers, and university supervisors when necessary.
  • Work with the Clinical Experience Review Committee to resolve appeals and other unique issues related to clinical experiences.
  • Facilitate evaluation of clinical internship experiences and clinical educators for the purpose of program improvement.
  • Assist in accreditation and program approval processes when information or data related to clinical experiences is required.
  • Serve on department, college, and university committees related to clinical experiences.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Plan and organize the Clinical Internship Fair in the fall of each year.
  • Gather identifying information from cooperating teachers, send to IT Dept. so myUSI accounts can be verified or created. Send information to the Tk20 Coordinator so Tk20 accounts can be created.
  • Serve on partner schools' Site Council if asked.
  • Meet with USI students who will be part of a USI sponsored team/group (such as athletics, choir) during their internship semester. Get schedules and communicate with cooperating teachers/principals about the intern's schedule.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Master's Degree in Education or related field
  • Minimum of three (3) years' substantive experience with demonstrated knowledge of organizational structures (of universities and school corporations or similar entities), demonstrated relationship accountability and mastery of specific areas of law or regulation. Ideally, experience will be in Teacher Education or other educational administrative setting.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills appropriate to both internal and external constituents. Written style appropriate for informational and problem resolution applications. Oral style suitable for all levels from students and instructors to School Corporation and State of Indiana Department of Education staff.
  • Demonstrated, strong relationship-building, poise and persuasive skills to ensure continued cooperation of educators meeting USI needs by participating in clinical experiences and clinical internship programs.
  • Excellent organizational and detail skills combined with ability to function effectively under high volume demands and with time sensitive processes affecting graduation and licensure.
  • Good judgment for distinguishing minor from major problems in placement, creating effective resolution for minor issues and making appropriate referrals for major issues.
  • Knowledge of computers, word processing, spreadsheet, and electronic mail software required.
  • Strong proofreading capability for both documents and internal and external system processing.
  • Ability to work independently with high degree of initiative required.
