Texas Inventionworks is a vibrant hands-on education program and innovation hub based in the Cockrell School of Engineering. The Texas Inventionworks staff is dedicated to fostering exploration, building experience, cross-discipline collaboration and working to solve real problems. In addition to online training, support for curriculum development and guidance for product development, the program operates more than 25,000sf of lab space. There are 6 professional staff members and a highly-empowered 60 -member student staff who establish a vibrant culture and peer-to-peer learning. The vision is a design, fabrication and innovation ecosystem at UT Austin that empowers students from all backgrounds to easily learn, collaborate, build and invent together.
Purpose
The Design Education and Operations Manager role is a broad, flexible and vital role within the Texas Inventionworks organization. The position will coordinate and support the creation and execution of projects related to courses, clubs, competitions and student-led product development, as well as events for students, campus groups, alumni, advisory boards and Cockrell School supporters. It will also include building and coordinating connections to companies and alumni and developing a team of guest mentors to work with students in curricular and extra-curricular programs. The position will also play a key role in program operations which can include digital infrastructure (databases, project management, online resources), communications, machine and lab usage and maintenance, purchasing, lab access, storage and workbench assignments. The position will; help build a network of relevant and engaged companies, coordinate with team members, student staff and volunteers to support external engagement, develop web, video and other social media communications, and facilitate outreach to students, campus organizations, companies and an advisory board. The role will be charged to help position Texas Inventionworks as a campus asset and ensure alignment of projects and other operations with the strategic direction of the program.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership in the cultivation of a culture of safety, collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Facilitate the development of hands-on, design-related assignments, modules and courses including collaboration with faculty members in all seven engineering departments and several other colleges.
  • Provide operational coordination and support to various types of activities that will run through Texas Inventionworks program, such as company-sponsored engineering projects, courses, competitions, clubs and open innovation.
  • Coordinate and help to establish advisory boards, corporate supporters and Cockrell School of Engineering development initiatives.
  • Develop and coordinate various internal projects and events including coordination of sponsors, guest mentors, and student organizations.
  • Create and cultivate the relationships between the TIW program and university organizations including departments, research units and student groups.
  • Provide guidance and co-development of high-level strategy and planning for the TIW program.
  • Support the management of funding in and expenses out for stewardship, project recognition and events.
  • Lead the collection of appropriate usage data and other metrics to assess the status and impact of the LMS program. Benchmark related programming and outcomes at universities, companies and innovation labs.
  • Support : 1) the management of student staff and volunteers, 2) Texas Inventionworks purchasing, lab access, project storage, and other operational activities, 3) facility improvements and management, 4) machine and lab usage and maintenance
  • Functions for this position will change from time to time as the overall program evolves.
  • Other functions as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
  • Five or more years of experience creating and managing complex projects or programs, especially involving design, fabrication and device testing.
  • Demonstrated abilities related to creating organizational communications, writing and promotional materials aimed at a broad audience that includes technical and non-technical peers and leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish strong working relationships with a variety of program stakeholders at all levels, including students, faculty, staff, and leadership in companies and other external organizations.
  • Demonstrated excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize own work and the work of others in a very dynamic environment.
  • Education-related skills and abilities such as instruction, mentorship and developing relevant materials.
  • Experience working with a wide variety of software systems including databases, project management, scheduling and communications
  • Experience managing budgets.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
  • An advanced degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Work experience that includes a substantial teaching, mentorship or advising.
  • Experience with programs related to engineering, technology or product development.
  • Experience with early-stage product development and/or projects within a small company or startup environment.
  • Prior work experience in higher education or an academic environment.
  • Experience developing marketing or promotional materials including presentations, video and web content.
  • Substantial project management experience.
  • Broad creative abilities (in written, visual and problem-solving capacities).
  • Working knowledge of commonly used tools, machines, and equipment used for fabrication or prototyping.
Salary Range
$85,000 depending on qualifications

Work Shift
  • Standard work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
