Building Standards and Technical Review upholds the high-quality standards of the University of Texas at Austin through reviews and inspections to ensure buildings and spaces can be reasonably maintained, are code and regulatory-compliant, and once completed, are safe and authorized for occupancy. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employer without sponsorship.
Purpose
The Director provides strategic leadership to the technical review team and will be instrumental in developing the building compliance program. The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in construction compliance issues and a proven track record of successfully managing a team to deliver high-quality reviews and inspections. This role requires exceptional leadership abilities, strategic thinking, and a commitment to delivering results on time and within budget.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Chief Building Code Official for UT Austin. Manage the Building Inspection team through the team lead, including schedule management and coordination with Project stakeholders. Coordinate activities with other AHJ's on campus.
- Manage the Technical Review Team through the team lead including schedule management and coordination with project stakeholders. This includes managing the TRT process and standards, updating standards as required, advising partners in Campus Operations and ITS for changes to the standards.
- Oversee establishment of building code requirements for use in UT Austin projects and in coordination with partner AHJ's at UT Austin. Serve as liaison to UT System, city and state code agencies and jurisdictions.
- Serve as primary technical advisor to Planning, Design & Construction and other Campus Operations teams regarding building and campus construction codes and standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Project Management, Construction Management or other related field. Engineering license or Architecture registration in the state of Texas, or be able to obtain a license in the state of Texas within 6 months.
10 years of experience in design and construction field with 5 years of managerial experience.
Demonstrated willingness and ability to develop knowledge of the University of Texas at Austin regulations and mandates, and other state and federal regulatory policies. Experience with relevant software programs. Ability to analyze large data sets. Demonstrated ability to develop mid to long-range plans. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment. Knowledge of the construction industry. Excellent communication skills and the ability to build rapport with key University administrators, licensed design and construction professionals, and members of the University community. Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access). Must have valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
15 years of experience in the construction industry. 7 years of managerial experience. Masters degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Science or Project Management. Certifications provided by ICC, LEED, CEFP, PMP, or similar.
Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
Salary Range
$150,000 depending on qualifications

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
