Salary Range: Up to $64,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions

Job Summary

Coordinate and oversee skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline driven motors and related auto equipment, machinery, and tools. Comply with the Texas state vehicle fleet management plan.

UTSA Facilities is part of the Real Estate and Property Management (RPM) team and responsible for operating and maintaining all campus buildings, grounds, and utilities. Core Responsibilities
  • Plans, organizes, assigns, and supervises individuals or crews in a variety of maintenance tasks including vehicles, carts, and equipment.
  • Coordinates repairs, preventative maintenance, and servicing of all automotive equipment; assigns work and projects to personnel and reviews project status and works with administrative service reports and TxFS when applicable.
  • Attends departmental meetings and has regular meetings with subordinates. Maintains agenda and distributes written meeting notes.
  • Conforms to safety standards as prescribed, including regular safety training with employees and completion of UTSA compliance and driving requirements as scheduled.
  • Responds to emergency repairs and calls, e.g. including coordinating safe towing and shop repairs on broken down UTSA vehicles. Also, may work odd hours and driving to sites of broken-down vehicles.
  • Creates, tracks, and oversees the processing and completion of each work order through the UTSA computer maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Drives and or coordinates vehicles to shops for maintenance or inspections. Must maintain insurability and UTSA requirements as it relates to MVR and CBC.
  • Maintains, organizes and secures keys, shops safety equipment, etc.
  • Updates other O& M Shops of any changes to processes as they relate to operations and maintenance of UTSA motor vehicles, golf carts and construction machinery.
  • Performs minor repairs, utilizing hand tools and shop equipment, to UTSA motor vehicles, golf carts and associated O & M equipment.
  • Maintains solid communications with customers, parts vendors, Stores and external repair shops.
  • Assists with preparation and completion of university and state of Texas vehicles reporting. Must be proficient with using Microsoft Office suite.
  • Completes supervisory requirements including evaluating subordinates and the required university processes.
  • Participates in University and departmental collaborative activities and training.
  • Inspects and performs repairs, preventative maintenance, and servicing of automotive equipment as needed.
  • Supervises entry level and skilled trades workers.
  • Ensures all waste and hazardous materials are disposed of in accordance with prescribed safety policies and environmental procedures; Maintains cleanliness of painting facilities and equipment; Maintains inventory of materials.
  • Reviews, prepares, and submits orders and requisitions for parts.
  • Repairs and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Maintains various records and prepares reports, e.g., records work order logs, maintains inventory of materials, evaluates, and prepares cost estimates for various projects.
  • Performs various administrative duties, e.g., estimates time and materials for repairs, maintains appropriate repair logs and records; Maintains parts and equipment inventory records; inspection and other vehicle maintenance scheduling.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Five (5) years of directly related job experience.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License. Must be able to obtain a Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver License within 6 months of employment.
  • Be eligible to drive a University Vehicle.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to display knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Ability to display knowledge of tools, methods, materials, and techniques of the specialty area.
  • Ability to display knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to display knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, standards, techniques, methods, practices, and tools of the trade.
  • Ability to display knowledge of basic arithmetic.
  • Ability to perform maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Word and Excel to manage fleet maintenance.

Working Conditions

Working Environment:
  • Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, hazardous chemicals, high-pressure water and air systems, high-speed equipment, confined spaces, and heights.
  • Exposure to variable Texas weather conditions and/or physical hazards such as working in elevate and confined spaces, working in attics, sub-floors, machine rooms, on roofs, and other operational areas. Exposure may be prolonged.
  • Exposure to elevated levels of noise.
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment when needed, including steel toe or non-slip shoes, eye protection, hardhat, back, body harness, earmuffs or plugs, and respirator.
  • Must wear and properly maintain uniforms.
  • Required to carrying a company cell phone and respond to after-hours emergency calls.
  • Required to be on stand-by call status for overtime, evenings, after hours, odd hours, shift work, weekends, and/or holidays as needed. Flexibility in scheduling may be required.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; use hands to feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions; high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands:
  • Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, and/or use repetitive motions.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairways and work on building rooftops of high elevation.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces such as ceiling, under-floor crawlspaces, and manholes.
  • Repetitive motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Reaching overhead, at or below shoulder level.
  • Operating machinery and/or power tools.
  • Required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as operating machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws, and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach; performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.

This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
